Bahrain: Jewellery Thief Sentenced to Three Years in Jail After Heist Is Foiled by Passersby

A man will now spend three years in jail after attempting to steal ornaments from a jewellery shop in Manama which was foiled by quick-thinking passersby. Court documents say the suspect, an Arab national, was caught by passersby after a high-speed chase through the streets of Manama.

He was also handed over to the Bab Al Bahrain police station by his captors. During the trial, the shop salesman told the court that he was stunned and shaken by the incident. He told the court that he found nothing suspicious about the man, and “so whatever pieces he demanded to see, I laid them out in front of him.”

He took the opportunity while the salesman had turned his attention to another customer. He grabbed the sets on display and took off. The salesman chased after him and the resulting commotion got the attention of several passersby, who also got involved in the chase.

He stumbled twice because of running fast causing the stolen ornaments to slip out of his hands. People then surrounded him, but he suddenly drew a knife out and threatened to attack. However, finding no way out, he finally gave up. People caught him and handed him over to the police at the Bab Al Bahrain police station along with the stolen items. Public Prosecution had charged the man with armed robbery. The Court also ordered to deport him after completing jail terms.
