Kuwait Seizes 360 Driving Licenses for Excessive Traffic Points
Over a period of three months, the Kuwait Traffic Department has revoked approximately 360 driver’s licenses due to license holders collecting over 50 points in the traffic points system. The points system, which assigns penalties for 90 different violations, is also connected to the “Mobile ID” application.
In a bid to enforce strict penalties, instructions were recently dispatched to traffic departments in the six governorates, directing them to suspend licenses permanently for those surpassing the maximum allowable points threshold of 50. Drivers who collect 14 points will have their licenses suspended for three months.
Following the initial suspension, drivers who collect 12 points will face a six-month license suspension, while those who reach 10 points after a second suspension will experience a nine-month suspension.
Subsequently, a driver will only require eight points to warrant a license suspension after the third suspension.
Finally, after the fourth suspension, a mere six points will result in permanent license revocation. Individuals with suspended licenses will be prohibited from driving, and the “Mobile ID” app will display a message notifying them of the withdrawal of their license.
If a license is permanently revoked, its restoration will necessitate approval from the Traffic Department Director General. Furthermore, if approval is granted, the violator will be required to undergo a driving test, akin to individuals obtaining a license for the first time.
The Traffic Department has specified that using a mobile phone while driving will incur a two-point penalty. Reckless driving, lack of attention, breaking a red light, and exceeding the speed limit constitute the violations that carry the highest number of points, with each offence resulting in a maximum of four points. Traffic violation points that do not surpass the suspension threshold will be removed from the department’s system one year after the associated fine has been paid.
