Oman: Environment Authority Team Tracks and Tags Humpback Whale
With help from the satellites, a team from the Environment Authority (EA) monitored the Arabian Sea humpback whale eleven times, Bryde’s whale four times and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin once.
The team also installed a tracking chip on one of the Arabian Sea humpback whales which was seen for the first time in November last year in the Masirah Bay area.
The chip helped in understanding its behaviour and movement for a period of up to six months.
The team also installed four devices with additional sensors to register details of the diving of the whale by observing its movement.
The team aimed to evaluate the risks of fishing, seek solutions to minimise accidents from vessels and obtain information on the migration pattern of whales and their habitats.
The study was conducted by a team at Masirah Bay with help from satellites in cooperation with experts from the Ocean Alliance Organisation Inc., the Environment Authority and Future Seas company.
