Sharjah: Bomb hoax creates panic among residents

A mysterious case was found at the entrance of a building near the Two Dirhams Center on Al Estiqlal Street that looked like a bomb which created panic among residents of Al Mahattah area in Sharjah.

The Sharjah Police evacuated the building and the surrounding area and blocked the roads opposite the Mega Mall.

A top official at Sharjah Police said that the operations room received a call at 8:00pm, warning about an alleged case with a bomb that had been placed outside a building.

Several police teams – including explosives experts, patrols, CID – and ambulance, civil defence team and firefighters arrived at the site and thoroughly combed the area for explosive devices.

The Sharjah Police then declared it was just a hoax and no bomb was present. The case contained shoes and other personal materials of someone who had just forgotten their belongings.

A resident said the luggage case had been seen at the entrance of the building in the morning and no one had dared approach it, thinking it was a bomb.

It was later that the people in the building and around the area decided to call the police, who arrived in less than five minutes after having received the call. The number of police vehicles created panic among the residents of the area, but the officers calmed people down and assured them that they were following normal procedures to ensure safety.
