Municipality officials shut down more than 1,600 food outlets in Jeddah during 19,238 field inspection trips.
The inspections came as part of the municipality’s efforts to monitor food establishments in line with a campaign launched by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs recently.
The municipality detected more than 3,100 violations in food establishments, which included restaurants, sweet shops, cafeterias and meat shops.
The municipality inspectors raided a number of places where food was prepared in an unhygienic manner and without obtaining any permits.
The municipality also destroyed thousands of tons of rotten food that was found not fit for human consumption.
