Written by Atharie Al Salem

The Bahraini-British motorsports team “2 Seas Motorsport” have taken the trophy this race weekend for Race 1 at the Barcelona GT Open, as part of the International European GT3 racing series.

After their stellar debut win in the first race at Monza, they took to Barcelona with their heads high for the win. The Mercedes AMG GT3 customer racing team have Croatian driver Martin Kodrić and Canadian Ethan Simioni in the driver’s seat for the 70-minute stint to the chequered flag.

Kodrić took the lead in qualifying 1 to get a solid position in P3, the second row of the race grid start. P1 belonged to Jim Pla on his GT Open debut with AKAA ASP Team. During the first lap of Race 1, chaos ensued for Omani driver Al-Zubair who ended up in the gravel, to later battle through the places to P5. Kodrić dropped a couple of positions in the opening lap with such a heated start yet made his way back up with some exciting overtakes against the Vincenzo Sospiri Racing Lamborghini GT team and a spot back in the top 3 on lap 7.

It was a seamless drive for 2 Seas Motorsport as Simioni led after the pit-stop to aim for the top step on the podium. The two drivers took the trophy for the team after the race ended prematurely behind a Safety Car. The podium saw a Mercedes 1-2, and the gleeful smiles of the blue and white suited drivers of the 2 Seas Motorsport drivers alongside part-owner Isa Al-Khalifa. Race 2 on Sunday saw them take P7 after a P6 start on the grid, after a nail-biting race to the finish.

The Bahraini fans were made proud, as this has been their second win in the GT Open series, and their fifth race win overall. Only making their debut in 2020, where they took third place at the British GT Championship with their previous car the Mclaren 720s GT3, their sweeping success has been impressive to many in the Kingdom and beyond in such a short period of time.
