Kuwait Launches Part-Time Expat Work Permits

Kuwait has started to issue part-time work permits for expats in the country.

In a statement on social media, the Public Authority for Manpower explained the cost and application process for part-time jobs.

The part-time work permits were first announced at the end of December and are designed to help employers utilise expatriates already working in the country without further need for international recruitment.

The work permits will be issued via the Public Authority for Manpower’s Sahel application.

The social media statement said the part-time work permit on the Sahel platform will develop the labour market in Kuwait, help business owners invest in the labour force currently in the country and address demographic imbalances.

The Manpower Authority also revealed fees for the new work permit:

  • KD5 ($16) for one month
  • KD10 ($32.5) for three months
  • KD20 ($65) for six months
  • KD30 ($97.5) for one year

Kuwaiti citizens are exempt from paying  the fees and can conduct part-time work without  limitation.

As previously reported, the expat applying for a part-time work permit can work for a maximum of four hours per day. An exception and no time limit is in place for employees in the contracting sector.

Permission must also be given by the individual’s primary employer.

More than two thirds of the population of the country are expats and the new rules are designed to address demographic imbalances in the country.
