AirAsia X (AAX) Berhad has officially selected Bahrain as its main hub for the Middle East. This change marks a significant shift in the airline’s international growth strategy. By expanding beyond its traditional base in Southeast Asia, the airline hopes to improve travel connections between Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. This decision follows a formal Letter of Intent signed on 3 November 2025, between Capital A Berhad and Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications.

The partnership with AirAsia aims to make Bahrain a central point for long-haul flights. Bahrain’s location offers a geographical advantage for an airline looking to connect eastern and western markets. The aviation infrastructure in the Kingdom will now support AirAsia X’s goal of building a globally linked network. This expansion is set to enhance the movement of passengers, trade, and tourism across various continents.

Strategic Shift and Fleet Growth

The airline has recently gone through a major internal change. After facing the challenges of the global pandemic, AirAsia X has shifted its business model. The company currently has a secured order of 374 aircraft. This significant fleet expansion is a part of a five-year growth plan. This plan aims to establish a steady presence in new regions while maintaining financial responsibility.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia X, mentioned that the airline is rebuilding with a focus on essential hubs and digital growth. He noted that Bahrain fits well into the airline’s long-term plan to connect the ASEAN region with the rest of the world. The airline intends for every new market it enters to strengthen its overall network. Doing this will help the company create lasting value while making long-haul travel more accessible to a broader audience.

Integration of Logistics and Maintenance

The expansion into Bahrain includes more than just passenger flights. It also covers the wider aviation ecosystem run by Capital A, the parent company of AAX. This includes cargo services and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations. Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to AAX, explained that Bahrain offers a scalable platform for these various business branches.

Teleport, the logistics division of Capital A, has already started operations in the Kingdom. Its first flight recently landed in Bahrain after a $50 million capital raise. This investment aims to help establish Bahrain as a major logistics hub in the Middle East. In the future, the group plans to collaborate closely with airport authorities and tourism boards to discover and unlock new demand areas. The strategy balances commercial success with operational strength.

Economic Impact on the Kingdom of Bahrain

The Bahraini government sees this agreement as a significant economic milestone. H.E. Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy, described the partnership as a strategic choice that emphasises Bahrain’s value as an economic partner. This investment is expected to bring several real benefits to the local economy.

The arrival of AAX will create direct job opportunities within aviation operations. In addition, the improved connectivity is likely to generate employment in the tourism, hospitality, and logistics industries. The government also highlights that this partnership will support skills development for Bahraini citizens. By joining a global industry, local workers will gain access to long-term career paths. The Minister welcomed AirAsia X as a new member of Team Bahrain, a collective effort to boost the nation’s economic growth.

Future Outlook for Long-Haul Travel

AirAsia X plans to keep expanding by upgrading its fleet and rolling out new digital initiatives. The airline uses a hub-and-network model to connect global regions. This model depends on strategic partnerships to maintain efficiency and keep costs down for travellers.

As the airline integrates its operations into the Bahraini hub, it will concentrate on providing value-driven travel. The collaboration between the airline and Bahrain represents a long-term commitment. It showcases a shared interest in growing the aviation sector and enhancing global connectivity. This development is expected to change how travellers move between Southeast Asia and Europe, making Bahrain an important stopover and destination in the international aviation landscape.
