Bahrain’s households dumps around 195,000 tons of food waste on average annually.
“Food dumped by families makes up 35.2% of the overall annual quantity of domestic waste in Bahrain”, said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf.
He pointed out the increasing rate of domestic waste being dumped daily in Bahrain and announced the launch of the third campaign to build a digital database for the national waste management strategy.
According to official figures, the overall quantity of domestic waste dumped in Bahrain last year (2017) stood at 554,000 tons.
Apart from the food waste(35.2%), figures were released for plastic waste (30.1%), cartons ( 11.6%), textiles (4.1%), metallic items (3.2%), glass (3.3%), organic waste (2.8%) and other miscellaneous items (9.7%).
