Bahrain: Appeal of intoxicated and speeding driver who killed a man rejected

An intoxicated man, who drove his vehicle rashly on a public road, hitting another car and killing its driver on the spot, had his appeal rejected by the Cassation Court. The suspect, a GCC national, allegedly caused the accident while speeding at around 160km/hr in an inebriated state. Police said he was also talking on his phone at the time of the accident.

His car, police said, rammed into the victim’s car from its rear end and banged it with brute force against the metal barrier separating the roads, turning it into a heap of metal beyond recognition. The car’s driver, a Bahraini national, suffered deadly wounds in the accident and medics, who reached the scene, pronounced him dead.

The accident occurred in 2021. Police took the suspect into custody from the accident scene in an inebriated state. Later a blood test returned him positive for alcohol. He also reportedly confessed to using his phone while overspeeding.

The Court also confirmed a BD2,000 fine slapped on him and also ordered to deport him once he completes his jail term. Public Prosecution had charged the man with reckless driving, causing an accident and killing a person.
