A local (Islamic) commercial bank charged a customer with 14 dinars because a cheque was returned due to insufficient funds, while the cheque issuing bank also charged him an additional 3.15 dinars, a total of 17.15 dinars.

The customer asked about the amount of the fine, though, the value of the cheque does not exceed 250 dinars.

He explained that it is the first time that a cheque is returned to him, and that the issue was merely an error in the dates and that he had a firm intention to deposit the amounts before the due date.

The story opens the door wide for fees charged by banks for some services in general, especially simple ones, at a time when the Central Bank of Bahrain affirms its strict control in applying laws and protecting consumer rights.
