Bahrain: Hazardous Waste Volume Crosses 24 Million Tons

“The volume of hazardous waste in Bahrain reached 24 million and 245 thousand tons,” indicated the latest figures issued by the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE).

Statistics showed that around 6038 tons were added to the hazardous wastes in Bahrain in 2019, while a total of 4408 tons were added in 2018.

The economic and industrial wastes collected by the Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning were one million and 796 thousand tons, with a decrease of 37% from 2018 that recorded two million and 466 thousand tons.

These wastes, the statistics showed, varied between industrial, agricultural, and construction. The most prominent number of wastes were the construction wastes as it amounted to 678 thousand tons compared to 138 thousand tons for waste coming from the agricultural, forestry and fishing sectors.

The volume of manufacturing waste was approximately 31 thousand tons, while the waste that did not specify its sources and return to economic activities and others amounted to about 382 thousand tons.

The statistics mentioned that the per capita waste production rate reached 1.5 kilograms per day, and these wastes are removed on a daily basis through collection services provided by the municipality of each governorate and cover all residents of Bahrain.
