Residents of the Ma’amir area were surprised to see large quantities of dead fish on the seashores. The photos were highly circulated on social media.
Some commented that when it first happened in the same place, we thought the cause might have been the high degrees of temperature and humidity during last August. Some people thought the cause was the weak water stream that might have reduced the oxygen in the water.
Previously, an environmental activist stated that the dead fish phenomenon was the result of the narrow water canals on the north and south sides of the area. He added that this was in addition to the pollutants mixed with the waters of Tubli Bay.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) has commented on the same incident that happened less than two months ago. It stated that the mortality of fish in Ma’amir seashores was caused by weather conditions. This was the main factor that contributed to stimulate the negative effects in the seawater with low oxygen dissolved due to green algae and dramatically high temperature. The SCE, in coordination with the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, removed the dead fish to avoid the spread of unpleasant odors.
