Bahrain: Medical devices containing Mercury prohibited

In cooperation with the Supreme Council of the Environment, and based on “Basel” Agreement for the transboundary movement of hazardous waste signed by the Kingdom of Bahrain in 1992, Article 4 states to reduce the production of hazardous wastes including products or medical devices containing mercury and its compounds.

The National Health Regulatory Authority would like to notify all importers and medical devices companies that the importation of all Medical devices containing Mercury is prohibited. For example, Sphygmomanometer, fever thermometer. dental amalgam, Esophageal dilators, Gastrointestinal tubes …will be prohibited due to the risks associated with the use of this device on patients and users. The toxic mercury leaked from these devices affects the nerves and brain functions, including memory loss, tremor and stress and can lead to death.

Therefore, it is strictly prohibited to import. sell and use medical devices containing Mercury and all healthcare facilities must dispose of all medical devices containing mercury before March 2020.

It is very important to report to NHRA at in case of finding any medical devices containing mercury in any healthcare facility to take the necessary action.
