The Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning has announced a tender to establish a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) center in Muharraq Medical Complex, which includes, in addition to the MS, a care center for long stay with a capacity of 100 beds.
According to a study published in one of the specialized European neurological magazines, the disease has multiplied by about four times among Gulf nationals, thus, there are 30 infected per 100,000 Gulf citizens.
The project is planned to be executed within 20 months starting in 2020 and to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021. The National Bank of Bahrain donated towards the whole cost of the center from buildings, medical equipment, medical and non-medical furniture.
MS is a chronic immune disease that affects the central nervous system and it is not an infectious or hereditary disease. It usually affects young people between 20 and 50 years old, and there are about 2.5 million people worldwide.
