The onion supply crisis escalated in the past few days as the price doubled. The price of one KG of onion was 200 fils and it reached 400 fils within 10 days due to an onion supply crisis in the world.
India, the global supplier of onions, still halts its onion exports due to floods and rain. With the continuation of halting Indian onion supplies for the second month and the end of the Egyptian onion season, the price has doubled.
The price of a kilo of Egyptian onions jumped to 400 fils per kilo, which currently represents the main supplies of onions in the local market. The price of an onion bag (weighing twenty kilos) rose from BD2.5 to about BD6, and the problem is not concerned with the local market but globally, the increase included all GCC countries and the region.
Onion prices will continue to rise in the coming period, with expectations of delayed Indian onion season to the end of this December. The Indian onions have completely disappeared from the market of all countries.
