Indian Population in Bahrain Reaches 320,000

Gulf countries are home to over 8.8 million non-resident Indians (NRIs), according to official Government statistics, which state the NRI population in Bahrain as 320,000. NRIs are Indian citizens holding passports from their homeland but residing in different states around the world.

Among these 13.4 million NRIs worldwide, the GCC countries boast the largest share, accounting for more than 66 per cent. As per the data provided by India’s External Affairs Ministry, accurate up to March 2022, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leads the region with a staggering 3.41 million NRIs.

Following closely behind are Saudi Arabia with 2.59 million, Kuwait with 1.02 million, Qatar with 740,000, Oman with 770,000, and Bahrain with 320,000 NRIs. Beyond the GCC, countries like the US and the UK attract a significant NRI population, with 1.28 million NRIs in the US and 350,000 in the UK.

Additionally, Australia, Malaysia, and Canada also have substantial NRI communities, further exemplifying the global presence of Indian expatriates. In Bahrain, NRIs play a vital role in the nation’s diverse cultural landscape and contribute significantly to its economic development. Their presence reflects the strong ties and shared interests between Bahrain and India, fostering a flourishing bilateral relationship.
