Argentina beat France on penalties to win World Cup 2022

Argentina survived a nerve-wracking fightback from France to secure their third World Cup — and Lionel Messi’s first.

Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick but couldn’t complete the turnaround story.

France were 2-0 down at the break before Mbappe’s two second-half goals dragged the holders into extra time.

Messi popped up and bundled the ball over the line in the second half of extra time, picking up his second of the game.

Mbappe then scored his third, and second from the spot, in the biggest game of all and forced it to a shoot-out.

The game’s two heavyweights went at it toe-to-toe, Messi and Mbappe were simply mesmerising. In the end, it was the elder statesman who fired his nation to glory.

Montiel buried the final penalty and sparked tearful celebrations on the pitch, in the stands and beyond.

It was the most remarkable of finals and a fitting end to a World Cup of enthralling comeback stories.
