Gulf Insider tests BMW’s newest SUV
The X2 is BMW’s newest SUV. It has a distinctive shape that somehow manages to look both sleek yet rugged at the same time, and it feels and drives like a luxury sport coupe, and that’s especially true of the M Sport version.
From the outside, the car looks squat and sporty looking, with a sharp rear. Size and shape are unlike any other of BMW’s SUVs, and aimed at a younger market.
Inside, it looks and feels like luxury with top quality fittings throughout, as you would expect from a BMW. The seats are comfortable and expensive looking. Everything is logically located and made of high quality materials. The iDrive system is smooth and easy to operate. The sound system’s excellent. There’s a USB port to fast-charge your phone, and wireless inductive charging for the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X is available as an option. The M Sport has a particularly attractive sports steering wheel that isn’t available for the other models.
There’s space inside for four people – that’s four adult people, with lots of leg room both front and rear. There’s good boot capacity – 470L to 1355L depending on rear seat configuration.
Driving it, l was impressed with its general agility. The steering is precise and it cornered beautifully. I was surprised to find it to be front wheel drive, which is unusual for an ‘SUV’, but front wheel drive works perfectly for this particular car. The relatively low driving position makes it feel less like an SUV and contributes to a better center of gravity when driving – in fact it could fairly be described as a raised hatchback. What’s more, the M Sport is a further 10mm lower than the other models of the X2 due to its sports suspension.

There’s plenty of power, making it great fun to drive at speed. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine offers 192 bhp, with 280Nm of torque driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. BMW claims a 0–100km/h time of 7.7 seconds.

This may be BMW’s smallest SUV, but it offers plenty of space inside, is fun to drive, and looks no less of a car when parked next to its bigger brothers, the BMW X4 and X6.
Commenting on the arrival of the BMW X2, Rashid Z. Al Zayani, BMW, MINI & Rolls-Royce Marketing Manager commented, “The new BMW X2 appeals primarily to a young and young-at-heart, urban and active target group who are keen to see their personal character reflected on the road through an emotionally-engaging car. We are thrilled to be able to deliver this model to our customers in Bahrain.”
The BMW X2 is now available in the Euro Motors showroom and is priced at BD17,995.
