Madan Perattur, CEO of Remya Management, which oversees popular dining destinations in Bahrain such as Black Angus, Klub 360, Wrangler, Texas Longhorn, Rodeo, and Eat Greek, shares his insights on innovation, leadership, and his passion for hospitality in this exclusive interview.

Can you discuss a recent innovation that has made an impact on your operations, the larger industry, or your customers?

In the hospitality sector, innovations have been introduced to enhance understanding and response to customer preferences, draw in new patrons, and retain loyal clientele. A restaurant concept is the cornerstone of its identity, encompassing aspects like design, menu, culture, and overall experience. It highlights various components that define the restaurant’s individuality and differentiate it from competitors.

A well-articulated restaurant concept attracts diners seeking unforgettable dining experiences. Merging multiple concepts, collaborating with media to get the message out, and leveraging social media are all innovations that are constantly shaping the F&B landscape. Interactive dining experiences, unique marketing strategies, refreshing interiors to create a vibrant atmosphere, and offering digital menus featuring distinctive food options ensure that we stay on top of the game all year round.

What are the biggest lessons learned while introducing innovation in your operations of Black Angus?

The innovations at Black Angus have been instrumental in driving business development and fostering growth and sustainability. The greatest lesson we’ve learned along the way is that we can’t always anticipate immediate success; instead, we must prepare for a series of trials and errors, from which we refine the idea and reapply it to achieve desired outcomes.

Consequently, every business faces implementation risks. Engaging in critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and exercising patience throughout the process can yield exceptional experiences. Each step presents opportunities to learn invaluable lessons, inspiring fresh and creative ideas to enhance outcomes and fulfil expectations, ultimately leading to a successful journey.

How do you foster a successful work environment?

Establishing an atmosphere where every team member feels comfortable sharing their concerns and ideas is crucial for the effective implementation of our business strategy. Open communication is fundamental to fostering teamwork and leveraging individual strengths. Recognizing employee contributions is essential in promoting a positive workplace culture.

Furthermore, investing in relevant training, retaining skilled and capable staff, soliciting constructive feedback, and timely monitoring progress in executing business plans are vital. Additionally, effective planning, task prioritization, and the ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances are key to maintaining a thriving work environment.

What inspired you to enter this particular industry?

My passion has been the driving force behind my journey in the hospitality industry, as I take great pleasure in delivering outstanding service and curating memorable experiences for guests. There is immense satisfaction in making people feel welcome, comfortable, and appreciated. What began with a single outlet has evolved over more than 20 years into the successful operation of multiple new venues in Bahrain, thanks to my entire team members and managers and their unwavering dedication.

Can you share a particular moment in your career that significantly influenced your leadership style?

Leading a team transcends mere management; it involves treating individuals as family and serving as a mentor who inspires them to work towards shared goals with ongoing encouragement. Allowing team members to rise to the occasion and recognizing their contributions are crucial elements of impactful leadership. For example, during the pandemic, while launching a new Black Angus branch in Seef amidst staffing shortages, we tackled the challenge by stepping in as regular staff to fully develop the outlet and successfully implement our business plan.

In hindsight, is there anything you wish to have done differently in your career or as a leader?

Emphasising clear and open communication can prevent misunderstandings and foster a better team environment. Even with a well-defined business strategy, it is essential to manage expectations for both profits and losses. Overcoming challenges and achieving success requires continuous skill enhancement, knowledge development, and prudent decision-making. I aspire to create career advancement opportunities for those eager to grow and shine. Experiencing shared growth and witnessing the joy on their faces brings immense fulfilment to me as a leader.

What is your strategy to manage stress and avoid burnout?

As the owner of fitness centres known as Madan Crossfit and Madan Fitness and as a boxer, my enthusiasm for the gym ensures that daily workouts play a vital role in my stress management. Additionally, engaging socially with others contributes positively in this regard. Regular exercise significantly boosts my overall health and sense of well-being, providing me with daily energy. Plus, exercise offers direct benefits for stress relief.
