The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has conducted a total of 18,192 inspections and visits across all four governorates of Bahrain in the first half of 2024, targeting illegal and undocumented workers. These efforts resulted in the identification of 1,473 individuals violating labour laws and the deportation of 2,452 foreign workers. The LMRA’s weekly reports highlight the authority’s commitment to enforcing labour laws and regulations, particularly those related to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority Law and the Residency Law of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The inspections, which spanned from January to June, were carried out across all four governorates: the Capital Governorate (112 inspections), Muharraq Governorate (48 inspections), Northern Governorate (45 inspections), and Southern Governorate (55 inspections). Bahrain Secures High-Income Status For 2024-2025

The Kingdom of Bahrain has been recognised as a high-income country, according to the World Bank’s latest classification for the fiscal year 2024-2025. This achievement is a notable point in Bahrain’s economic journey and its success in providing a high standard of living for its citizens. With a per capita gross domestic income (GDI) exceeding $13,845 by the end of 2023, Bahrain has surpassed the World Bank’s high-income threshold of $14,005 per capita GNI. This accomplishment reflects Bahrain’s sustained economic growth and its strategic diversification beyond the traditional oil and gas sectors. The World Bank’s annual income classification, updated on July 1, reflects the previous calendar year’s per capita GNI. The classification system serves as a widely recognised indicator of a country’s economic capacity and development level, with countries categorised into four groups: low-income, lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income, and high-income, based on their per capita GNI. Bahrain’s transition to high-income status is particularly noteworthy in the global context. In the late 1980s, 30% of reporting countries were classified as low-income, while only 25% were considered high-income. By 2023, these proportions have shifted dramatically, with only 12% of countries classified as low-income and 40% as high-income. Bahrain’s success can be attributed to its […]

Asian Man Accused Of Forging University Degree To Obtain Dental License, Case Adjourned

The High Criminal Court has adjourned the case of an Asian man accused of forging a university degree to obtain a dental license until July 15th. The court decided to postpone the hearing to allow the defendant to appoint a lawyer and to bring the defendant from prison. The Public Prosecution has accused the 51-year-old defendant of manipulating the information system of the Ministry of Health’s registration and licensing office between 2005 and 2022. The defendant allegedly altered a renewal form to falsely claim he was a qualified dental technician, despite the fact that his license was forged. The case came to light when the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) received an email from a person of the same nationality as the defendant, alleging that the defendant’s degree was fake. The authority then hired a company to verify the authenticity of the degree, which confirmed that it was indeed forged. The investigation revealed that the defendant submitted forged documents to the NHRA in 2006, based on which he was granted a dental license in 2007. He continued to renew the license until May 13th, 2022, when the forgery was discovered. During the investigation, the defendant confessed to the charges and […]

MP Loses Parliament Seat Over Undisclosed Foreign Citizenship

Bahrain’s highest court has removed a member of parliament from his seat after discovering his undisclosed foreign citizenship. The Seventh Court of Cassation announced today that the representative for Muharraq’s first district, Mohammed Rafiq Al Hussaini, has been disqualified due to his breach of the constitutional requirement to hold only Bahraini nationality. The decision, delivered by presiding Judge Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, followed an appeal by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs. They provided evidence that Al-Husseini held dual citizenship at the time of his candidacy for the Council of Representatives, contravening Article 57(a) of the Constitution, which mandates single nationality for members. The Court of Cassation declared Al-Hussaini’s membership in the Council of Representatives for the First District in Muharraq Governorate invalid from the date of this ruling. The court explained that Article 57(a) of the Constitution requires members of the Council of Representatives to hold only Bahraini citizenship, either by birth or naturalisation, without retaining any other nationality. This requirement is not a form of discrimination based on origin but a measure aimed at ensuring the full allegiance of representatives to the Kingdom of Bahrain, thereby supporting the country’s democratic development. The court affirmed […]
