Review: A day out with the Ferrari Portofino M

Charlie Cooksey takes the new Ferrari GT 2+ Spider for a spin around the island… I had the pleasure to visit Euromotors, Bahrain’s official Ferrari dealership, to collect the new Portofino M. The ‘M’ stands for ‘Modificata’, which in Ferrari nomenclature refers to cars that have undergone an evolution that has boosted their performance. The Portofino M is everything a Ferrari should be: sexy, powerful, and fast. Its twin-turbo V8 churns out 612 horsepower—up from 591 in last year’s model—and it should hit 60 mph in the low-three-second range. The small back seat and trunk won’t fit much, but practicality has never been a Ferrari selling point. So how else does the new Ferrari Portofino M differ from its predecessor? Well, it has a redesigned powertrain, a new eight-speed gearbox and a five-position Manettino that includes a Race mode. The exterior is also subtly changed and looks even sportier and more aggressive than the previous model, with a new design of the front of the car – the bumpers in particular.  Usually, I prefer my Ferraris in traditional red, but I must admit to being strongly drawn to the unique blue/grey paintwork of this particular car. Ferrari claims that the new model delivers both superior handling […]

Interview: The impact of COVID-19 on Bahrain’s education sector

The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant disruptions in different sectors of the society; the education sector worldwide is not an exception to the impact of these unprecedented times. In Bahrain, the spread of COVID-19 has required a range of extraordinary responses from authorities and education institutions. We recently interviewed Dr. Jawaher Shaheen Al-Mudhahki, the Chief Executive of the Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA) to know more about the current status of educational institutions in the Kingdom. We have learned from your recent annual report that you have shifted your frameworks and processes in rating educational institutions remotely. Did this have any implications on the accuracy of the ratings? The BQA is committed to improving education and training by evaluating educational and training institutions fairly and objectively. In response to the current challenging circumstances, the BQA has established a framework that focuses on evaluating the schools’ responses to any exceptional circumstances the country or the world is going through.  This framework has been adopted to gauge the appropriateness of the schools’ measures, procedures and practices to ensure the continuity of providing proper education to all students. It does not replace the regular review framework – it adopts a somewhat modified approach and set […]

Bahrain: AUBH achieves eligibility to apply for US accreditation

The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) has become the first University in the Kingdom to achieve eligibility to proceed with an Application for Accreditation with the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Once awarded, AUBH would become the first higher education institution to be accredited by WSCUC in Bahrain. A determination of eligibility is not a formal status with the WASC Senior College and University Commis-sion, nor does it ensure eventual accreditation. It is a preliminary finding that the institution is potentially accreditable and can proceed within five years of its Eligibility determination to be reviewed for Candidacy or Initial Accreditation status with the Commission.

Ferrari F8 Spider: Beauty, Muscle and Power!

Charlie Cooksey from Gulf Insider drives the new Ferrari F8 Spider. The F8 Spider is a mid-rear-mounted two-seater that provides jaw dropping performance with reputedly the best 8-cylinder engine in the world. It offers intense driving pleasure, unprecedented handling, and superior ride comfort. Luxuriously stitched leather seats hold you in secure comfort no matter how hard you drive this car. Every element of the dash, steering wheel, door panels and tunnel is beautifully designed. It was a beautiful April day – not too hot, and while waiting at the Al Hawaj traffic lights, I remembered this car becomes a convertible at the touch of a button… So, I activated the process, by which, the blue sky opened up for me. The conversion to an open top sports car takes a dozen or so seconds and is mechanics as an art form. I realized all eyes from within the other cars around me were watching with fascination as the car changed. The F8 Spider was designed in parallel with the F8 Tributo – the most powerful, fastest, and lightest Ferrari for its type. They replace the 488 GTB and 488 Spider and have been significantly improved to provide even better control […]

Interview: Tony Davis, National Coach, Bahrain Boxing Federation

Gulf Insider interviews Tony Davis, National Coach, Bahrain Boxing Federation. How did it feel to be back in Bahrain after overcoming your recent struggle with Covid-19? The flight from Istanbul to Bahrain was an emotional one. It was like coming back home. I had a lot of warm messages including one from Shaikh Khalid saying “welcome back”. It was a relief to finally get away from that horrendous episode, and sort of come back to my Bahraini family, where I belong. Can you tell us your experience in helping establish Bahrain’s boxing federation from ground up? When I first arrived on 1st December 2018, I really didn’t know what to expect. Two weeks after my arrival, I was invited to the Bahraini Mixed Martial Arts Federation where I started taking some notes. During this time, I realized that what they thought was boxing – wasn’t boxing. They weren’t very familiar with the basic rules and regulations, such as duration of rounds, equipment, attire. Their attire didn’t suit that of a sporting nature as rules dictate. They didn’t have the right kits. This is when I realized that they were missing one important aspect – education. I was able to provide […]

We are so excited to welcome 2021 with new degrees, new students and new partnerships! It is an exciting time at AUBH. Not only were we able to welcome students back on our beautiful campus last fall, thanks to our dual-modality learning experience and outdoor activities and events, but we also have three new undergraduate programs and three new graduate programs in the pipeline and under approval with HEC. Today, we are of course offering our learning experience online, in line with the Council for Higher Education’s directives until March 14th, however, hope to welcome our students back on campus as soon as it’s possible to do so. Adding to our list of recent accomplishments is that we are now welcoming international students from fourteen different countries, adding to our already diverse student body. AUBH is receiving a growing number of transfer students who wish to continue an American-style education in the GCC. These are students who started their education abroad, but now with our innovative academic approach, they are choosing to study closer to home. Last year we announced […]
