Bahrain: Business Owner Referred To Trial Over VAT Evasion Exceeding BD 240,000

The head of the Tax Evasion Crimes Unit at the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution has confirmed that the unit received a report from the National Bureau for Revenue (NBR) against the owner of a commercial establishment for collecting Value Added Tax (VAT) from customers without remitting it to the authorities. According to the statement, the accused collected more than BD 240,000 in VAT from clients but failed to transfer the amount to the NBR, despite submitting VAT tax returns. This constitutes a clear violation of the provisions of the VAT Law. Following the report, the prosecution immediately launched an investigation. Authorities ordered the lifting of banking secrecy on the accused and the business accounts, heard testimonies from NBR specialists, and reviewed relevant documents. The investigation revealed that the accused submitted false documents to the NBR, unlawfully deducted VAT input tax, failed to issue invoices for VAT-taxable transactions, and did not properly maintain tax records, invoices, or accounting books related to import and service supply operations. Based on the evidence, the prosecution concluded that the accused deliberately evaded paying the due VAT amount. As a result, an order was issued to refer the case to trial. The first hearing […]

Bahrain: Court Hears Case Of Three Asians Accused Of Importing Marijuana Via US Parcel

The First High Criminal Court heard a case involving three Asian defendants accused of importing and trafficking marijuana concealed inside a parcel sent from the United States. The shipment allegedly contained 560.27 grams of marijuana hidden among folds of clothing. The Public Prosecution charged the first and second defendants with importing and selling cannabis and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking in circumstances not permitted by law. The third defendant was charged with possessing and acquiring marijuana with intent to traffic. During the hearing, defence lawyer Zahraa Khodair requested the acquittal of her client as a primary plea. Alternatively, she sought exemption from punishment on the grounds that her client had cooperated with authorities by providing information leading to the arrest of another suspect. Khodair argued that the case procedures were invalid, citing what she described as a fundamental violation during the inspection of the parcel. She stated that the customs officer opened and examined the package without the presence of the first defendant, which she said breached his legal rights and undermined the connection between him and the seized items. She maintained that this procedural flaw invalidated subsequent actions, including the arrest and investigation, under Article 339 of the […]

Bahrain: Firm Ordered To Pay BD 3,000 For 18-Month Property Deed Delay

The High Court of Appeal has rejected a company’s appeal and upheld a lower court ruling ordering it to pay BD3,000 in compensation to a citizen for delaying the delivery of a property title deed. The court found that the company breached its contractual obligations by failing to hand over the title deed for a year and a half, despite the sales contract stipulating a delivery period of just three months. The ruling confirmed the plaintiff’s right to both material and moral damages. Lawyer Sarah Ali, representing the plaintiff, said her client had purchased a residential plot for BD50,266.160, with the company committed to transferring ownership within three months of signing the contract. However, the company failed to meet this deadline. She explained that the company later issued a written declaration pledging to compensate the buyer with an annual rate of 5 per cent on the amount paid for each day of delay. Despite this commitment, the company neither delivered the title deed on time nor paid the agreed compensation. As a result of the prolonged delay, the plaintiff suffered financial losses after being forced to sell the property below its actual market value. She also endured moral damages after […]

Bahrain’s Smart Traffic Camera System Begins Recording Violations

The Ministry of Interior has announced that the smart camera system of the General Directorate of Traffic is now fully operational. Since the launch of the system’s first phase, it has already recorded a number of traffic violations, including using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt. The system was activated after ensuring the technical infrastructure is fully ready and capable of operating efficiently under various conditions. The General Directorate of Traffic emphasized that, to ensure timely receipt of traffic notifications—such as vehicle registration deadlines, driver’s license renewals, and recorded violations—drivers must regularly update their personal information through the “Hakomati” app. This helps prevent violations from accumulating without the driver’s knowledge. Authorities also stressed the importance of adhering to traffic rules, avoiding unsafe driving behaviors, and practicing responsibility and road awareness at all times.
