Late Taipei Surge Ends Bahrain’s Asia Cup Run

Hopes of a place in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup quarter-finals were dashed in a costly final six minutes on Thursday as Bahrain surrendered a seven-point lead and lost 109-99 to Chinese Taipei in Ahmedabad. Bahrain led 91-84 with 6min 37sec left and were closing in on the last eight. Chinese Taipei then outscored them 25-8, punished turnovers and found their range from three-point territory as the game slipped away. The loss ended Bahrain’s bid for a quarter-final place and sent Chinese Taipei through to face South Korea on Friday. Bahrain had taken a 79-75 lead into the fourth quarter after winning the first 24-23 and the third 27-22. Chinese Taipei took the second 30-28 before winning the final quarter 34-20. Hassan Abdulkadir led Bahrain with 36 points and 18 rebounds, but his fifth foul with 3min 10sec left forced him out as Chinese Taipei took control. National Team Turn Tables on Qatar

JaKarr Sampson hit 25 points as Bahrain came from behind to beat Qatar 76-69 in Doha on Thursday, taking charge through the middle of the game after an early scare. Sampson did the damage in 27 minutes, adding eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Mustafa Rashid was just as telling, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to fall two assists short of a triple-double. He also made two steals. Calls Grow for Tougher Deepfake Laws

Deepfakes should be written into Bahrain’s laws before fake videos and cloned voices are used to wreck reputations, impersonate public figures or spread panic in a crisis, MP Dr Maryam Al Dhaen has warned. She said the rapid growth of artificial intelligence had opened legal and security risks that existing cyber laws did not spell out clearly enough. Deepfake tools can now make false footage and voice recordings look real, raising the risk of identity theft, smears and false claims that can harm individuals and families. Bahrain already has laws covering defamation, impersonation and misuse of communications. But Dr Al Dhaen said AI had moved fast enough to warrant rules aimed squarely at deepfake crimes. She warned that the threat grows during crises, when fake clips made to appear as though they came from public figures or government bodies could mislead the public, stir fear and harm social order. Lawyer Jassim Al Isa said Bahrain has yet to create a standalone deepfake offence, though current laws can already catch many such acts. Al Ramli Fire Probe Intensifies After Four Deaths

Public Prosecution has launched an investigation into the deadly apartment fire in Al Ramli that claimed the lives of four members of the same family on August 18, as authorities work to establish the circumstances and cause of the blaze. The Northern Governorate Chief Prosecutor said the Public Prosecution immediately began its investigation after receiving a report from the Northern Governorate Police Directorate. Crime Scene investigators and a forensic doctor were assigned to conduct technical and medical examinations. A preliminary examination found that the victims died from suffocation. Prosecutors visited the fire scene and conducted the necessary inspection before examining the bodies at Salmaniya Medical Complex. The bodies were later ordered to be handed over to their families. Meanwhile, Civil Defence was tasked with preparing a technical report on the cause of the fire, while investigators were instructed to complete all necessary procedures. The apartment remains under precautionary custody as the investigation continues. Building fire kills mother, 3 children in Bahrain; King offers condolences to father

A deadly fire claimed the life of a mother and her three children in Bahrain on Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior announced. The blaze erupted in an apartment of a multi-storey building in Ramli Housing, where the 27-year-old woman along with her three children, aged five, three and one, passed away. They are now survived by the husband, who was not at the house when the fire began. Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa offered his condolences to Hassan Abdul Aal Al Otaifi — the father of the children — over the tragic incident. Upon receiving reports of a blaze, Civil Defence teams and vehicles rushed to the site, where they began operations to control the fire and prevent it from spreading. They followed it by necessary cooling operations to prevent the fire from reigniting. According to local media, the five-year-old child was found with a weak pulse but later died, while the other two children and the mother had already passed away when teams reached the site. Gulf Cup tickets go on sale

Tickets have gone on sale for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, with Bahrain set to defend their title when the regional showpiece kicks off in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, next month. The Gulf Cup Football Federation, in collaboration with the local organising committee, announced yesterday that supporters can now purchase tickets for the tournament, which will run from September 23 to October 6. Eight Gulf teams will contest 15 matches across King Abdullah Sports City and Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City, with Jeddah hosting the competition for the first time. National U18 side beat Syria to seal Asia Cup play-off spot

The national Under-18 side produced a second-half-powered rout of Syria yesterday, turning a one-point lead into a 92-68 win to take second place in Group B and reach the FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup quarter-final play-offs in India. The towering 16-year-old Somto Patrick Onoduenyi drove the win, scoring 26 points, pulling down 14 rebounds and blocking five shots in a dominant 38-minute display.
