On Thursday, Kuwait Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah appointed Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah as the country’s prime minister, the country’s state news agency reported. Until now, Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah has been the Deputy Prime Minister of Kuwait. Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah is well-known as a politician, economist, and diplomat. Born on 10 October 1955, Al-Sabah is also the son of Sheikh Sabah III Al-Salim Al-Sabah, the former Emir of Kuwait. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Claremont Graduate University and a PhD in economics from Harvard. He previously served as Kuwait’s ambassador to the US in 1993. His appointment comes after the passing of Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Shortly afterwards, Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was announced as the Emir of the State of Kuwait.

Kuwait has temporarily suspended issuing private pharmacy licences. Minister of Health Dr Ahmad Al Awadhi has issued a decision to temporarily halt granting and issuing licenses for private pharmacies until an evaluation study is concluded. The Ministry of Health said in a statement that the decision, which came in line with its responsibilities to supervise and regulate private pharmacies, stipulated forming a committee to assess status of private pharmacies. Kuwait pharmacies The panel will write down observations in regard of the laws and decisions regulating the practice of the profession and will submit detailed reports to the minister within three months, the statement added. Minister Dr Al Awadhi also decided to form a central electronic monitory system to follow up on the prescription of psychotropic substances, dispensed from private pharmacies. All private pharmacies, permitted to trade in psychotropic medications, must register in the electronic system.

Controversy is heating up in Kuwait over a decision to cancel student mixing in lecture halls at Kuwait University. The first salvo in the tug-of-war was fired by Kuwaiti MP Mohammad Hayef who quoted Education Minister Adel Al Manea as having agreed to scrap registration for attending mixed lectures. In 2015, Kuwait’s Constitutional Court ruled in favour of co-education when it explained that a law prohibiting mixing at educational institutions can be implemented merely by providing seats for females and others for males inside the lecture halls. The minister’s latest decision has drawn an angry response from students. At least two student groups have called for holding a sit-in protest at the university’s faculties of literature and teachers’ training against the move. In the same vein, the student group, the Democratic Centrist List, started a countrywide campaign to collect signatures to protect academic independence against what it termed as “political intervention” and to safeguard students’ rights. Another student group at the School of Law said they will file an urgent lawsuit to block the implementation of the contested decision on cancelling mixed university class. Kuwait has set new school hours as it looks to manage traffic congestion. The education ministry has set new hours for school classes nationwide, saying the measure aims to ease traffic congestion ahead of the new academic year. The new timings are set to come into effect for the 2023-2024 school year, due to start later this month. Kuwaiti authorities have said that winter camping, a popular tradition in the country, will be allowed again, a year after it was suspended due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Camping in outdoor areas will be allowed as of November 15 until mid-March, according to a Kuwaiti official.

Kuwait confirmed 742 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total caseload to 131,205 so far. The Health Ministry Official Spokesman Dr. Abdulla Al-Sanad said that four infected people had succumbed to the disease, which takes the death toll to 808. There are 114 people currently receiving intensive care for the virus out of a total 8,508 patients being hospitalized. The ministry has conducted 5,278 swab tests in the last 24 hours, out of a total of 960,725 so far. The ministry earlier said that 626 infected people have recovered from the virus, upping the total number of those to have overcome the disease to 121,889.
