Kuwait has introduced comprehensive amendments to its traffic laws under Decree-Law No. 5 of 2025, imposing significantly harsher penalties for a wide range of violations. The reforms, aimed at improving road safety and curbing reckless behavior, represent the most extensive overhaul of Kuwait’s traffic regulations since the original law was enacted in 1976. The new provisions include fines ranging from KD 15 to KD 10,000, alongside stricter imprisonment terms for severe offenses. Key violations and penalties: Modernised administrative measures: The law introduces electronic communication for traffic violations and court summonses through government apps, SMS, or email, streamlining the legal process and ensuring timely notifications. Courts can now impose alternative penalties, such as community service, rehabilitation programs, or restitution for damages caused by violations. Police officers are authorised to arrest individuals for severe offenses, including fleeing the scene of an accident, DUI, or participating in high-speed road races. Repeat offenders face heightened penalties, with license suspensions of up to five years. The amendments are set to take effect three months after publication in the Official Gazette, giving drivers and vehicle owners time to familiarise themselves with the updated regulations. The Ministry of Interior emphasised that these reforms aim to reduce traffic […]

The Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) announced yesterday (Monday) a significant hydrocarbon discovery at the Al Jlaiaa offshore field, a find that could bolster the nation’s oil and gas reserves and reinforce its role as a major global energy supplier. Al Jlaiaa field, located within Kuwaiti territorial waters and covering 74 square kilometers, is estimated to hold approximately 800 million barrels of medium-density oil. Tests on the exploration well, Al Jlaiaa 2, also revealed 600 billion standard cubic feet of associated gas, equivalent to 950 million barrels of oil equivalent. The oil is notably free of hydrogen sulfide and contains low levels of carbon dioxide, signaling high-quality reserves, according to a statement released by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). “This discovery is a major milestone for Kuwait’s hydrocarbon resources and highlights the success of KOC’s marine exploration efforts,” the company said. The find, part of KOC’s ongoing exploration strategy, raises hopes for additional reserves in the Upper Cretaceous formations within Kuwait’s marine and adjacent regions. Al Jlaiaa marks the second marine discovery under KOC’s current exploration plan, following the Al Nokhatha field discovery in July 2024.

Kuwaiti police are hunting for an expatriate accused of stealing wedding dresses and accessories worth nearly $52,000. Investigators have ordered the expatriate, whose nationality was not revealed, be placed on the wanted list, after a Kuwaiti woman had filed a legal complaint claiming he had stolen the dresses and accessories with a market value of around KD16,000 from her shop, reported Kuwaiti newspaper Al Anba. The claimant accused the man – an employee – of a breach of trust and said she had tried to contact him in more than one way, but it was to no avail. She explained in her complaint lodged with police in the Hawalli governorate that the stolen items were wedding dresses, other attires for engagement, and a set of crystals and accessories. The woman voiced fears that the accused would leave for his home country with the loot. A case of breach of trust was recorded against the man and an arrest warrant was issued against him. It is not clear yet if the accused had stolen these dresses all in one go or over time. The High Civil Court has ordered a chocolate distributor to pay 15,000 Kuwait dinars dinars in damages to a claimant following a breach of an exclusive distribution agreement. The case, detailed by the claimant’s lawyer, Zuhair Abdullateef, centres on a September 2023 agreement where the claimant was to be the exclusive distributor of a specific chocolate brand, marketed as a “fountain,” in Kuwait. According to lawyer Abdullateef, the claimant transferred nearly 19,000 Kuwaiti dinars to the defendant in October 2023, with the understanding that the products would be delivered within 8 to 10 weeks. However, the defendant failed to deliver the goods despite repeated requests, offering only false promises. “My client discovered that the defendant’s company registration was inactive and legally cancelled. The defendant had established a new company with a similar name and a different registration number, transferring the payment to this new entity. A criminal complaint was filed, and the defendant admitted to receiving the funds and his obligation to repay them, along with the claimant’s expenses,” Abdulateef argued before the High Civil Court. The defendant offered a partial settlement of 3,700 Kuwait dinars, but the claimant pursued legal action. The claim included damages for financial losses and […]

Kuwait has deported 648 illegal expats in the first 13 days of the current month, according to security authorities pursuing a relentless crackdown on unlawful residents in the country. The Kuwaiti Interior Ministry’s General Department of Residency Affairs added that 509 other violators of the country’s residency and labor laws have been rounded up during the same period. In the first half of January, security agencies conducted 28 campaigns across all governorates of Kuwait, targeting violators of residency and labor laws, the department said. The ministry has repeatedly vowed to show no leniency in enforcing the law and arresting violators of residency regulations, stressing that both the illegal worker and the employer will be held accountable. Kuwait, a country with an overall population of 4.9 million, most of whom are foreign nationals, is seeking to address its demographic imbalance and regulate the labor market. Authorities have recently launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal foreign residents who failed to take advantage of a grace period to rectify their status. Thousands have been apprehended. A new residency law, which came into effect earlier this month, offers potential reconciliation and the payment of fines by violators. However, this law does not apply to […]

Kuwaiti authorities have exposed a major forgery scandal involving a citizenship file linked to a man born in 1957, leading to the revocation of dozens of citizenships. The man, who was granted Kuwaiti nationality in 1993 at the age of 35, is accused of fraudulently obtaining his status years after the Gulf War, officials said on Friday. Investigations revealed that 74 individuals, falsely registered as his children and grandchildren, were added to his file. All those involved, including the forgers, are set to have their citizenship revoked, according to the Nationality Investigations Department. The case was exposed after the man’s supposed brothers admitted to authorities that they were not related to him, revealing he had been fraudulently added to their deceased father’s citizenship file. Further inquiries showed the father had used a fake identity to secure benefits and later included the man in his file to obtain citizenship post-invasion. “The man’s nationality was obtained based on fraudulent claims,” the department said, adding that legal procedures are underway to revoke all citizenships associated with the case. The Kuwaiti government has ramped up efforts to combat fraudulent nationality claims as part of a wider push to protect the integrity of its citizenship […]

Official data from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) indicates that, as of mid-2024, 39,765 Kuwaiti women aged 30 and above remain unmarried. Kuwait’s decision to revoke citizenship under Article 8 of the nationality law is stirring debate, with experts suggesting the move could address rising spinsterhood among Kuwaiti women and encourage marriages within the national community. Official data from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) indicates that, as of mid-2024, 39,765 Kuwaiti women aged 30 and above remain unmarried. Meanwhile, 269,611 Kuwaiti women are married, including 18,002 to Arab nationals, 693 to Asians, 50 to non-Arab Africans, 264 to Europeans, 402 to North Americans, 64 to South Americans, and 39 to Australians. Dr. Ibrahim Al Shukri, Director General of the Gulf Center for Information and Documentation, stated that the policy could influence societal dynamics by discouraging marriages between Kuwaiti men and non-Kuwaiti women. “Restricting the granting of citizenship to non-Kuwaiti spouses will encourage Kuwaiti youth to marry within their community, preserving traditions and customs,” he explained. Al Shukri highlighted that the ease of marrying non-Kuwaiti women has contributed to the […]
