Over 60 Expats Arrested in Oman

As part of an inspection campaign carried out by the Ministry of Labour (Mol) in the Wilayat of Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate, more than 60 expats have been arrested for violating various aspects of Oman’s Labour Laws. The Ministry of Labour (Mol), said in a statement: “With the aim of following up on the expat workforce and the extent of their commitment to the provisions of the Labour Laws and the regulations and decisions issued, and in continuation of efforts to combat the phenomenon of indiscriminate selling practiced by the expat  workforce in the Wilayat of Barka in the South Al Batinah Governorate, the Ministry of Labour, represented by the General Directorate of Labour Welfare, carried out an inspection campaign with the support of the inspection unit of the Foundation Security and safety services.  During the inspection 66 workers were found violating the provisions of the Labour Laws. Legal measures are being taken against them.”

Hefty Fine for Trade in E-Cigarettes, Shisha Announced in Oman

A fine of upto OMR 2,000 will be imposed on anyone who trades in electronic cigarettes, shisha, and their accessories in the Sultanate of Oman. Sulayem bin Ali Al-Hakmani, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority, issued Ministerial decision No. 756/2023 on Sunday, January 7, 2024, banning the circulation of electronic cigarettes, shisha, and their accessories. The decision reads as follows : Article One stipulates that the circulation of electronic cigarettes, shisha, and their accessories is prohibited. Article Two says that, without prejudice to the penal penalties stipulated in the aforementioned Consumer Protection Law, an administrative fine not exceeding OMR 1,000 shall be imposed on anyone who violates the provisions of this decision, and the fine shall be doubled in the event of a repeat violation. If this violation continues, an administrative fine of OMR 50 will be imposed for each day that the violation continues, provided that its total does not exceed OMR 2,000. OPEC Reaffirms Commitment To Oil Market Stability

The General Secretariat of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) issued a statement, reiterating the member countries’ commitment to the group’s ongoing and persistent efforts aimed at maintaining the stability of the oil market. The statement also highlighted “the unity and cohesion of the group” as well as its resolve to continue to work within the framework of the Declaration of Cooperation, after consultation with OPEC member states and non-OPEC producing countries participating in the Declaration. AI-Powered Scanners Speed Up UAE-Oman Border Crossings

UAE to Oman border crossings will be speed up, following the introduction of AI-powered scanners at Abu Dhabi Customs centres. In line with its strategic plan and key priorities, the General Administration of Abu Dhabi Customs has completed a project to provide its land customs centres in Al Ain city in the UAE with advanced inspection devices supported by artificial intelligence systems and rapid non-stop scanning technology. The new devices will enhance the movement of UAE tourist vehicles, buses, and trucks in accordance with the highest standards of health, radiation safety, and compliance with international standards and specifications. COVID: Mild Cases of JN.1 Variant Detected in Oman

The JN.1 variant of COVID-19 has been detected in several cases in Oman, according to a senior official. The official, from the Ministry of Health, confirmed that most of these Covid patients had a mild infection and that all of them have recovered. “The Sultanate of Oman takes all necessary surveillance and prevention measures throughout the year. The global spread of the new variant of Covid-19 JN.1 does not pose a significant risk to public health,” the official added. The official also said that the JN.1 Covid-19 variant is an interesting mutant with mild symptoms. There is no increase in the rate of hospitalisation in intensive care or wards currently.

Oman: CBSE Exams To Begin on February 15 in Indian Schools

India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the 10th and 12th class board exams will begin on February 15, 2024. The exams will last for 55 days and conclude by April 10, 2024. According to the CBSE press release, the examinations for class 10 will begin on February 15, 2024, and continue till March 13. The 12th board examination will also begin on February 15, 2024, and end on April 2. The release further informed that the exams will start at 10.30 am. For the 10th grade board, the Sanskrit exam will be held on February 19, 2024, followed by Hindi on February 21, 2024. English will be held on February 26, 2024, and Science on March 2, 2024. Home Science is scheduled for March 4, 2024, followed by Social Science on March 7, 2024. The last two exams are Mathematics on March 11, 2024 and Information Technology on March 13, 2024. Oman to participate in World Intellectual Property Day celebrations

Oman will participate in the World Intellectual Property Day (IP) on 26th April with the slogan ‘IP and SME: Taking your Ideas to Market’, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. Ali bin Hamad bin Saif Al Maamari, Director of the Intellectual Property Department at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said:  “Oman’s national innovation strategy relies on the intellectual property axis as a basic pillar to develop a national strategy for intellectual property, which can empower the Sultanate to be ranked  among the top 20 countries in the Global Innovation Index.”
