UAE Records 352 Violations At Labour Accommodations In 3 Weeks

Around 1.5 million workers reside in labour accommodations across the UAE, authorities revealed on Wednesday. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), over 1,800 companies are registered in its electronic Labour Accommodation System. In its latest round of inspections of residential facilities for workers, the ministry flagged 352 violations, which included inadequate ventilation and air conditioning; failure to provide safe conditions for flammable materials; failure to meet sanitation requirements; and general cleanliness issues in the housing facility. Following the inspection from May 20 to June 7, some of the non-compliant companies were warned and others, fined. Some were granted up to one month to fix their accommodations. Mohsin Ali Al Nassi, assistant undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the MoHRE, said: “The ministry is committed to providing labour accommodations that meet the highest standards of comfort, safety, and security. “Ministry inspectors regularly carry out field visits to labour accommodation facilities across the UAE to ensure companies comply with their responsibility of providing adequate and comfortable housing for their workers.” Labour accommodations are mandated to provide uninterrupted supply of clean, cold water; and bedroom and washroom supplies. UAE: Restaurant Shut Down For Posing Risk To Public Health In Abu Dhabi

A restaurant was shut down by an Abu Dhabi authority in the capital city for violating food laws. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) decided to administratively close Amir Al Sham Restaurant and Grills located in Abu Dhabi’s Khalidiya area. The restaurant was found to be violating Law No. (2) of 2008 regarding food in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and its associated legislation. Furthermore, its practices posed a significant risk to public health.

Saudi Arabia: 4 Children Drown In Mecca Floods

 Four children from a family died after their car was swept away by torrents resulting from heavy rains in the Saudi city of Mecca, according to a media report. The tragedy happened after the car, which was carrying their family, swerved due to the flooding in eastern Mecca and was swept away by a strong torrent that forced the vehicle to ram into the wall of a local farm and clung there, Okaz newspaper said. The Arab expatriate family included the parents and six children. Civil defence personnel managed to save the parents and two of their children aged 13 and two years. The four others — three girls and a boy — were swept away by the flooding. The bodies of the three girls were later recovered while search is ongoing for the fourth, the report said. Mecca was earlier this week lashed by torrential rains accompanied by lighting and thunder. Baseball United To Build Middle East’s First-ever Professional Ballpark In Dubai

Baseball United, the first professional baseball league focused on the Middle East and South Asia, announced its plans to build a professional baseball field and ballpark in Dubai, the first such ballpark in the region. The new ballpark will be constructed within The Sevens sports and entertainment complex, located on Al-Ain Road (E66), just a short drive from downtown Dubai. Baseball United said the new ballpark will not only be the first in the UAE and GCC, but it will serve as the only professional baseball grounds across a more than 10,000 km stretch of territory ranging from Morocco in North Africa to India, Bangladesh, and several countries within Southwest Asia. Sharjah Announces Sports City Development, Designs And Location Revealed

Sharjah has announced plans for a new Sports City development in the Emirate. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has approved the designs and location for the new Sports City in Sharjah. The city, which will be built at a site selected by the Sharjah Ruler, will feature four sports complexes catering to both team and individual sports. Indians Among 6 Dead As Ship Sinks Off Kuwait: Reports

Six crew members have died after an Iranian merchant ship capsized in Kuwaiti waters, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported Tuesday. “The Arabakhtar I ship, whose six crew members were of Indian and Iranian nationality, sank on Sunday,” Nasser Passandeh, head of Iran’s port and maritime navigation authority, was quoted by IRNA as saying. The report did not say what caused the Sunday incident, and an Iranian official said search operations were still ongoing to locate three of the victims’ bodies. Three bodies had been retrieved in a joint effort between Iran and Kuwait, Passandeh said.

Oman Customs has seized more than 11,500 restricted and prohibited cigarette cartons after it raided a house of an expat in Muscat Governorate.
