More than 30 expatriates face deportation from Kuwait in connection with involvement in banned gambling and alcohol manufacture, authorities have said. Kuwaiti police said they had arrested 30 foreigners practising gambling during security raids in the governorates of Al Ahmadi and Al Farwaniya. Undisclosed sums of money, mobile phones and lists associated with gambling were seized in the suspects’ possession. “The arrested persons will be referred to the administrative deportation department in pursuit of the common good.” Meanwhile, police arrested seven foreigners running two makeshift plants for manufacturing local alcohol in Kuwait City and Al Ahmadi. The suspects included a woman. In the security crackdown, police also seized tools used for the illegal manufacture of alcohol including 181 barrels, 413 vials and four distillation devices. The suspects are expected to be referred to the administrative deportation department, according to a security source. Kuwait deported some 42,000 expatriates last year for violations of the country’s residence and labour laws as well as for involvement in crimes. Kuwait has recently toughened measures against illegal foreign residents and warned that any expatriate covering up an unlawful resident will be deported too. Kuwaiti individuals or companies employing illegals will face charges of unlawfully sheltering […]

A Kuwaiti appeals court has overturned a 10-year-jail term earlier handed down to an expatriate and a citizen on charges of involvement in a high-profile exam leak case. A lower court had also ordered the two defendants – a Syrian expatriate and a Kuwaiti engineer – to pay combined fines of KD241,000 in the same case. Both had been originally charged with leaking the high-school exams on social media in return for gains surpassing KD241,000. However, the pair appealed the verdict and pleaded innocent. On hearing the case, the appeals court decided to revoke the ruling on the grounds of lack of evidence. The court found out that the students had unlawfully got access to exam answers through anonymous culprits after the test sheets were distributed to them at exam halls The court was also told that the prime defendant holds an engineering degree and gives private lessons to university students. Accordingly, the seized money was the outcome of this tuition. Last year, Kuwaiti prosecutors referred to court three cases involving dozens of defendants on charges of exam leaks, forgery and money laundering. In January last year, Kuwaiti media reported that authorities had busted a network of secondary school exams […]

Sébastien Loeb rounded off the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia with another impressive stage victory for Bahrain Raid Xtreme today to secure third place in the event, as Carlos Sainz confirmed his fourth outright win. Loeb and Fabian Lurquin in the BRX Prodrive Hunter recorded their fifth stage success of the rally on the final 175km time trial, which started and finished in Yanbu, and they did it with more than five minutes to spare from Guillaume de Mevius in a Toyota Hilux. The BRX duo just fell short in their attempt to overhaul the Belgian to take what would have been a third successive overall runner up finish on the world’s toughest rally, although their final day display underlined what might have been but for some earlier misfortunes. The result means that Prodrive ended the 46th edition of the Dakar as the most successful manufacturer, with six victories overall for the Hunter, which had given Loeb the same number of stage wins in succession last year to set a record. The nine-time World Rally Champion had given BRX a strong chance of a first overall Dakar triumph before a combination of navigational and mechanical issues, and punctures, took their […]
