Saudi Arabia started charging an annual fee for the issuance and renewal of Vehicle Registration License (istimara) in accordance with the vehicle’s fuel efficiency effective from Sunday, Oct. 22. In the first phase, the fee will be applicable to only owners of 2024 model new light vehicles. The second phase will come into force during the year 2024 and will cover owners of all light and heavy vehicles. The annual fee will be calculated according to two criteria. The first criterion is engine capacity for all light vehicles model 2015 and before and all heavy vehicles while the criterion will be fuel efficiency for light vehicles model 2016 and later. The fee has been divided into five levels according to fuel consumption efficiency and no fee will be charged for low-consumption vehicles. It is noteworthy that the Council of Ministers decided in August 2021 to charge an annual fee for the issuance and renewal of vehicle licenses according to their fuel efficiency. Education authorities in central Saudi Arabia have ordered a three-day suspension of classes in six schools and a shift to online teaching after viral infection cases were detected. The suspension, which took effect from Tuesday, was ordered by the education department in Al Mithnab governorate, part of Al Qassim, in response to an alert from health authorities in the area of Northern Kharma about the spread of a seasonal flu viral infection among students and teachers of the schools. The schools, where classes were suspended, are being sterilised, and in-person classes will resume on Sunday. The virus, which hit these schools, is seasonal and the shift to online teaching came after a rise in infection cases. On the first day of infection, around 140 cases were recorded and 70 others on the following day. Sources put the total number of infection cases among students and teachers at 300. Health authorities in Al Qassim, meanwhile, said the infection is not a cause for worry and is seasonal. “The decision to suspend classes is discretionary,” it added, according to Okaz.

Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University of Riyadh has approved the creation of the Department of Cinema and Theatre in the College of Media and Communication. This is part of the comprehensive academic restructuring of the university. The restructuring included the creation of the Department of Cybersecurity in the College of Computer and Information Sciences; the Department of Early Childhood in the College of Education; the Department of Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering; and the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Radiology in the College of Medicine. The university also approved amending the name of the College of Economics and Administrative Sciences to be called the College of Business with the creation of the Marketing Department in the same college itself. Saudi Arabia aims to become a global player in manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) and related products, including electric batteries, said Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Al Khorayef. The minister made the remarks during the inauguration of Lucid Motor’s first EV manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia, located in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Rabigh governorate. The inauguration of Lucid Motor’s plant confirms the sound implementation of the National Industrial Strategy (NIS) and its seriousness in establishing a flexible, competitive, and sustainable industrial economy led by the private sector, Al Khorayef said. The Ministry of Health has launched an anti-bullying awareness campaign in schools aimed at safeguarding the mental health of students and reducing bullying incidents. Through the campaign, students are taught the forms bullying can take, its effects and how to deal with it, while parents are educated about the seriousness of bullying and their role in confronting the problem. The campaign identified the most important signs that indicate that a student is being bullied, which include: physical injuries, poor academic performance, anxiety and mood swings, and changing eating habits. The ministry encourages students who are being bullied to communicate with their teachers, parents or anyone else they trust, as well as to avoid responding to the bully or being alone in his or her presence. The ministry called on teachers and school principals to engage students and parents and encourage them to contribute to the efforts to combat bullying.

The Music Home School of Art Institute in Riyadh has announced the launch of the first music diploma accredited by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture. The first-of-its-kind music diploma in the Kingdom constitutes a quantum leap in the field of music education through training and performance, which comes in line with the country’s future aspirations. The program will start in September and last for two academic years, said the Executive Director of the Music Home, Moataz Al-Shabanah, during a press conference held at the institute’s headquarters in the presence of the Ministry of Culture’s deputy minister of national partnerships and development, Noha Kattan. He confirmed that the program will contribute to spreading the music culture, which is a universal language and a channel for building bridges of communication with other cultures. The program will include two paths, which are music education, and music performance, Al-Shabanah clarified, noting that it will qualify the graduate to become a music teacher in schools, or a professional instrumentalist, in accordance with accredited academic curricula that are compatible with the best international educational curricula.

As many as 20 universities across Saudi Arabia have decided to switch over to two semester system instead of the three-semester system effective from the new academic year, that will start on Sunday, Aug. 20. All these universities have revoked their existing three semesters and made the changes to transform into two semesters in the academic calander accordingly. These universities include King Abdulaziz University of Jeddah, King Saud University of Riyadh, Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University of Dammam, King Faisal University of Al-Ahsa, King Khalid University of Abha, Al-Qassim University, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University of Riyadh, Jeddah University, Taibah University of Madinah, Al-Jouf University, Najran University, Tabuk University and Hafar Al-Batin University. The universities also included Shaqra University, Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Electronic University, Majmaah University, Bisha University, Taif University and Hail University. According to the university sources, 9 universities will continue their three-semester system despite the growing calls for a return to the two-semester system, starting from the beginning of the new academic year.
