‘Mini-Dubai’ Being Built In Budapest Amid EUR 5 Billion UAE-Hungary Deal

The UAE and Hungary have inked a new economic cooperation deal to bolster trade and investment ties between the two nations, according to state news agency WAM. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, signed the agreement in Budapest. The agreement focuses on enhancing bilateral relations and promoting growth in key sectors like industry, commerce, investment, tourism, logistics, infrastructure, and real estate. It aims to ramp up non-oil trade, which has surged significantly in recent years, reaching over US$1.127bn in 2023, marking a threefold increase from $409m in 2019. Al Zeyoudi emphasised that the deal lays the groundwork for increased trade and investment, leveraging the economic potential of both nations. He highlighted the shared goal of sustainable economic growth and fostering collaboration between the private sectors of the UAE and Hungary. UAE billionaire Mohamed Alabbar has reportedly signed an agreement with the government of Hungary to build a “Dubai-like neighbourhood” in Budapest in a deal worth up to $7 billion. Alabbar’s Eagle Hills Properties will be working with the Hungarian government to construct “tallest tower in Europe and a shopping mall” and develop a partially abandoned railway station as part of the mega project, a Reuters report said. Other international media reports said the proposal included the construction of a “Dubai-like skyscraper” in Budapest. Woman Arrested in Sharjah on Charges of Aborting Eight-Month-Old Foetus

An Indonesian woman in her 30s has been arrested in Sharjah on charges of aborting her eight-month-old foetus and disposing of the body in a garbage bin. The incident was brought to the attention of authorities when a call was made to the national ambulance service regarding a woman experiencing ‘cardiac arrest’ and bleeding in Al Majaz area of Sharjah. Paramedics reached the spot and too the women to the hospital and also reported the matter to Al Buhairah Police Station, prompting an investigation into a potential crime. Subsequently, a police team conducted a search of the woman’s residence and uncovered the fetus’s body in the garbage bin. It was revealed that she had been cohabiting with her boyfriend, who was also an Asian national. Sharjah Police have taken the woman into custody and launched an investigation into the incident.

An abaya is a loose over-garment and robe-like dress (usually black), while a niqab is a garment worn by Muslim women in the Middle East in order to cover their body and face, except their eyes. The arrest forms part of the “Combat Begging” campaign launched by the force in cooperation with strategic partners to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the country’s civilised image by curbing the practice. The individual justified his choice of disguise by claiming that female beggars often receive more sympathy than their male counterparts. The arrest was facilitated by a community member’s alert to the General Department of Operations. It highlights the importance of public cooperation in these matters. UAE Announces Consultation On New Tax

The UAE has launched a public consultation on tax rules in the country. The UAE Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced the launch of a digital public consultation to gather the views of relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the Global Minimum Tax (GMT) or Global Anti-Base Erosion Model Rules (Pillar Two) (GloBE Rules) as well as other tax matters in the UAE. The consultation will be open from March 15 2024 to April 10, 2024, and accessible via the Ministry’s website or the UAE’s Government Portal. UAE tax consultation The digital public consultation reflects the Ministry’s belief in the importance of consulting with all stakeholders including the multinational groups operating in the UAE, advisors, service providers, and investors. The consultation is split into two parts: To familiarise stakeholders with the rules and to ensure informed feedback is received, the Ministry has issued a Global Minimum Tax briefing document alongside the consultation. The Ministry of Finance welcomes clear and concise comments with, where possible, examples, data, or other information to support views being put forward in the response to this consultation. UAE-India Flights: Airline Announces Cheaper Tickets In New Fare Categories

Air India Express passengers will have the option to save on flight tickets by travelling light. Budget carrier Air India Express has launched a new fare family, which gives travellers the option to have an increased baggage allowance of up to 40kg — or have no check-in luggage at all. The new fare categories — which applies to flights to and from the UAE and other international destinations — are: Xpress Lite offers cabin baggage-only fares, which would be the most economical for passengers travelling with the airline. Xpress Value fare allows 15 kg check-in bag fares while Xpress Flex offers unlimited changes with no change fees. Xpress Biz comes with business class seats, complimentary meals, and priority services. A subsidiary of Air India and a part of Tata Group, the airline introduced Xpress Lite on February 20 for UAE passengers who want to travel without check-in baggage. Xpress Biz fares are available on all the new Air India Express Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Dubai Updates Truck Ban Hours for Ramadan 2024

Dubai will change the hours trucks are banned from key roads during the city for the duration of Ramadan. Truck ban timings on key routes and areas within Dubai are being adjusted during Ramadan, said the RTA. On the E11 corridor extending from the Sharjah border to Interchange No. 7 on Sheikh Zayed Road passing along Al Ittihad Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, and Sheikh Zayed Road, as well as the central areas of Deira and Bur Dubai, the revised truck ban timings for these areas will be from 7am to 11pm, instead of 6am to 10pm schedule. Dubai Ramadan truck ban RTA has modified the truck ban timings during the morning across the streets where the ban is enforced three times a day. The new timings will be from: Truck movement will continue to be restricted throughout the year in Al Shindagha Tunnel, Al Maktoum Bridge, the Floating Bridge, Al Garhoud Bridge, the Business Bay Bridge, the Infinity Bridge, and the Airport Tunnel. For Fridays during Ramadan, the truck ban will be in effect from noon to 3pm instead of 1pm to 3pm.

The “Rapid Test Cup”, a quick narcotics-detection technique developed in Dubai, was demonstrated at the World Police Summit following rigorous tests to confirm its effectiveness, reliability and high accuracy. The device accelerates the examination of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, thereby reducing detainee detention time from 7 hours to 10 minutes, while ensuring no human interference in interpreting the results. The new Rapid Test Cup technique allows law-enforcement experts to detect 13 types of modern narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
