Watch: Sharjah To Use Drones To Fight Fires In High-rise Buildings

The Sharjah Civil Defence will use drone technology to deal with fires in high-rise buildings in the emirate, starting next year. The new technology will enter service in the first quarter of 2025 and will contribute significantly to achieving the strategic and operational goals set by the authority related to reducing firefighting time and achieving rapid response, especially in high-rise buildings, and moving from traditional firefighting methods to advanced and creative methods. The authority tested the drone with a technical team from the Civil Defence and the company Drone First Building Services, based in the UAE. Brigadier Sami Al Naqbi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence, said: “We tested the drone, and it passed the test successfully, reaching a height of 150 metres, equivalent to about 40 floors, in just 18 seconds,” adding that the drone demonstrated the ability at this height to spray water up to 15 metres from an internal tank with a capacity of 5,000 litres, which is refilled via a water hose connected to a ground tank. Brigadier Al Naqbi explained that the drone can be equipped with a thermal camera that helps firefighting teams determine the source and intensity of heat and its concentration, especially […]

Bahrain Mandates Expat Maternity Cases to be Handled in Private Hospitals

Private hospitals in the Kingdom are gearing up for a surge in maternity patients following a new directive from Government Hospitals, which mandates that all non-Bahraini women be referred to private facilities for delivery. The circular issued to all government hospital staff stipulates that non-Bahraini patients should be referred to private hospitals or their primary healthcare facilities for delivery. Public data from 2020 reveals that public hospitals handled 13,292 deliveries compared to 4,000 at private hospitals. Meanwhile, the recent increase in maternity advertisements in the media also indicates that private sector hospitals are preparing for this influx while maintaining high standards of care. Sources confirmed to The Daily Tribune that the new policy, effective from the start of this month, is intended to enhance the quality of care and services for patients. According to the advertisements reviewed by The Daily Tribune, private hospitals charge BD350 for a normal delivery and BD700 or more for a caesarean section. In contrast, Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) charges BD150 for normal birth, despite BD574 being the actual expense for a normal birth and over BD747 for a caesarean section, as outlined in a parliamentary inquiry report presented by former MP Ali Eshaqi in 2020. Low Cortisol May Fuel Long COVID: Animal Study

An animal study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that a COVID-19 infection may leave behind certain proteins, which can trigger the process that causes cortisol levels to drop. This results in increased inflammation and immune overreaction to stress. The effect on cortisol may underlie many changes associated with long COVID, which has many neurological and neuropsychological symptoms, such as brain fog, anxiety, sleep disturbances, fatigue, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. “Our study suggests that low cortisol could be playing a key role in driving many of these physiological changes that people are experiencing with long COVID,” lead author Matthew Frank, a senior research associate with the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Boulder, said in a press release. The discovery brings science one step closer to understanding long COVID, which affects 10 to 35 percent of people after contracting an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to the researchers. Lingering Proteins Link to Low Cortisol Researchers in the study noted several earlier experiments that led to their recent investigation. Prior findings included: Based on the above, the researchers theorized that spike proteins may produce physiological effects that prolong the duration or increase the magnitude of […]

MP Abdulameer Alerts On Hospital Closure Leaving 36 Jobless And Hundreds Of Patients In Limbo

MP Zainab Abdulameer has raised concerns about the ongoing closure of a private hospital in Bahrain. The closure, which has dragged on for nearly eight days, has left 36 Bahraini employees jobless and thrown the treatment of countless patients into disarray, despite them having already paid for their care upfront. Abdulameer who chairs the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee in the Council of Representatives, stated that roughly 200 staff members, including 36 full-time Bahrainis, have not seen their salaries for two and a half months. Another 14 Bahrainis, employed part-time while holding other jobs, are also affected. She has been liaising with the Ministry of Labour and the Labour Minister to push for quick resolution of the salary issue. Adding to the concerns, hundreds of patients who had started treatment at the hospital have found themselves abandoned mid-way through their care. The hospital, mired in financial trouble, is unable to provide refunds or continue treatment, leaving patients in a difficult position. Last Wednesday, the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) visited the hospital and instructed the management to pull all promotional materials and advertisements for its services. Abdulameer also highlighted that the hospital, which began operations in Bahrain in 2019, is […]

“These Results Are Alarming”: Billions Of People Have Inadequate Micronutrients, Study Estimates

More than half the world’s population is deficient in micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals, according to a new study. According to the results, published in Lancet Global Health journal, 99.3 percent of the global population is missing at least one important nutrient. The study collected data from 31 countries to estimate micronutrient consumption in 185 countries. “Our study is a big step forward,” Chris Free, research professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, UC Santa Barbara, and co-lead author, said. “Not only because it is the first to estimate inadequate micronutrient intakes for 34 age-sex groups in nearly every country, but also because it makes these methods and results easily accessible to researchers and practitioners.” Deficiencies in micronutrients harm health and can lead to various preventable health conditions, the researchers say. “Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia, leading to impaired cognition and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness globally, affecting mostly children and pregnant women,” the authors wrote in their study. “These results are alarming,” Ty Beal, lead author of the study, said in a press release. “These gaps compromise health outcomes and limit human potential on a global scale.” The researchers […]
