Cancer research has evolved significantly over time. In 1882, a surgeon performed the first mastectomy to treat breast cancer. By 1950, researchers linked smoking to lung cancer. In 2010, the FDA approved a vaccine to treat prostate cancer. Now, as Visual Capitalist’s Jenna Ross and Sabrina Fortin explain below, researchers have found another weapon in the fight against cancer: AI. This graphic from Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust explores the growing role that AI is playing in cancer research. Cancer Research Publications The influence of AI is evident in the scientific literature. PubMed, a database of biomedical research, has seen growth in the number of articles where both AI and cancer are a major topic. The number of publications has risen substantially, particularly in the last few years. The Potential of AI Researchers believe that AI will positively impact the cancer field in numerous ways. In a 2023 study, authors of peer-reviewed scientific articles on AI and cancer were asked about the future of AI. Above all, researchers expect AI to have the highest near-term impact on grading and classifying cancer through image analysis. A cancer’s grade refers to how abnormal the cells look, with more abnormal cells growing more quickly. Following this, researchers believe […]

Saudi health authorities have moved to quell concerns over the spread of a hypothetical disease which could be 20 times worse than COVID-19. The Ministry of Health has provided reassurance to residents of Saudi Arabia regarding a hypothetical pathogen, dubbed Disease X, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned could be deadlier than the coronavirus. The Health Ministry has affirmed that the remarks made by the WHO during the World Economic Forum Davos merely describe a hypothetical scenario. Disease X in Saudi Arabia The ministry added that the situation is not as grave as it may have been portrayed. Such calls are made annually, the ministry said, emphasising its ongoing vigilance and full preparedness for any potential circumstances. The ministry further stated that the WHO’s remarks, as well as similar calls by scientists over the past decades, are intended to encourage health systems and countries to enhance their capabilities in combating epidemics and minimizing potential losses. A Health Ministry spokesperson said: “The recurring message year after year is that humans are vulnerable to epidemics due to our coexistence with numerous viruses and germs”. It added that such germs constantly mutate, making it challenging to predict the types and timing of epidemics. The […]

Over the last several months, Public has reported on a growing body of evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the Covid pandemic escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China. Last year, Public and Racket were the first to report that US government officials had identified that the first patients to become sick with Covid worked at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Now, Public has learned from multiple sources that the FBI knew since at least March 2020 that Covid was the result of a lab leak. A Chinese national from Wuhan, working as a confidential human source (CHS) for the FBI, told their handler at the FBI’s Chinese Intelligence Squad. The sources said it was probable that the whole squad of 25 people knew. “A person working at the Virology Institute lab in Wuhan, China was infected, left the building, and spread the virus outside the lab in Wuhan,” the CHS told the FBI, according to a source. “It didn’t have anything to do with the wet market or the bat soup story they were going with.” The sources asked Public to protect their identities and those of their colleagues. The sources say they are speaking up now […]

The top U.S. public health agency labelled multiple news articles as misinformation even though the articles were accurate, according to internal emails and experts. The U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added the misinformation labels to articles from sources in widely circulated internal messages, according to copies obtained by sources. One of the articles reported in a peer-reviewed paper found heart inflammation, or myocarditis, was more common after COVID-19 vaccination than after COVID-19 infection. Nordic researchers reviewed electronic health records and counted 109 cases of myocarditis following the COVID-19 infection, compared to 530 after vaccination. Their study was published by the British Medical Journal. An internal CDC email said that the study “has been picked up by anti-vax proponents as evidence that vax was more likely to cause myocarditis than COVID-19 infection” and provided a hyperlink to The Epoch Times article. The Feb. 7, 2023, email listed the article under “points of confusion/potential rumors/misinformation.” The CDC did not list any data or other information supporting its label. “The Epoch Times article should not be labelled as misinformation,” Dr. Tracy Hoeg, a physician-scientist at the University of California-San Francisco, told The Epoch Times via email. Dr. Hoeg said the Nordic study aligned […]

For 12 years, he was treated for diabetes based on an erroneous medical diagnosis, only to discover recently that he never had the condition. Local media reports indicate that the young man was under the impression he had diabetes, following a diagnosis made at a hospital. He underwent treatment for over a decade before a subsequent examination at the same hospital revealed the absence of the disease. The young man’s defence lawyer, Mustafa Mulla Youssuf, has filed a lawsuit seeking compensation and accountability for the grievous error. The wrongful diagnosis and subsequent medication have led to his client becoming infertile and suffering a considerable loss of eyesight, impacting his daily life and ability to drive. Youssuf, in his case, stated that his client initially visited the hospital 12 years ago for a health check, where he was surprisingly diagnosed with diabetes. Following the doctor’s advice, he continuously took medication for years. It was only during a recent visit to the hospital that another doctor corrected the diagnosis, leading to the shocking revelation of the consequences. The specific hospital involved […]
