The southern Lebanese city of Tyre is being pounded by Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday, despite President Trump’s insistence that Lebanon not come under attack. Israel’s military had hours prior issued an evacuation order for all civilians in the area, amid the unraveling and failing ceasefire. Casualties are already high, coming at a tense moment after starting on Sunday Iran sent ballistic missiles against Israel over its renewed airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, where it says Hezbollah command centers are located. The NY Times reports of the growing death toll Tuesday, “At least eight people were killed in the bombardment, and dozens more were wounded, Lebanon’s health ministry said. The Israeli military also targeted towns and villages across southern Lebanon, including areas that were not covered by evacuation warnings, according to the country’s state-run news agency.” So clearly the air raids are expanding, per the report, even after the latest Trump warnings directed at Netanyahu to not do anything that would sabotage a broader Iran peace agreement. President Trump is still maintaining that Washington and Tehran are in the “final throes” of cementing a deal, and is even suggesting (once again) that an agreement will be done in days: […]

There likely are more than five scenarios that Iranians could opt for as hostilities unwind, but the following five visions represent the paths Iran could take this year. Will 2026 onward become the Third Islamic Republic, following the first (1979-1989) and the second (1989-2026)? We can only speculate on the outcome of this third evolution, which might or might not be powered by clerics. First, in the fluid situation on the ground in Iran, There are many forces at work. When the dust clears, Iran might fall right back into the same rut it has traversed since 1979. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei might be at the top of the pyramid, while President Masoud Pezeshkian and members of the Assembly of Experts, Cabinet, Courts, Guardian Council, and Parliament will appear to remain loyal to the ideology of militant Shia Islam. Over 80 percent of Iranians are Shia, while the remainder are adherents of Sunni Islam, the Baha’i faith, Christianity, and inter-religious practitioners. In this scenario, the dreaded Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) would continue to hold sway as a parallel military force to the national armed forces (Artesh) of Iran – which is by now also fully under the control of […]

Berlin: France and Germany have abandoned their joint plan to develop a next-generation fighter jet after years of disagreements between the companies leading the project, dealing a major blow to Europe’s defence ambitions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to scrap the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) after manufacturers Dassault Aviation and Airbus failed to resolve longstanding disputes over the programme, officials from both countries confirmed on Monday. Launched in 2017, the FCAS project was intended to develop a new fighter aircraft to replace France’s Rafale jets and Germany’s Eurofighters by around 2040. Valued at more than €100 billion ($115 billion), it had been seen as a symbol of deeper European defence cooperation. However, the project became mired in disagreements over leadership, intellectual property rights and the aircraft’s design requirements. French defence company Dassault sought greater control over the programme, leading to repeated clashes with Airbus Defence and Space. The collapse comes at a time when European nations are seeking to strengthen their military capabilities amid growing concerns over Russia’s actions and calls from the United States for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security. Despite previously expressing support for the project, Merz acknowledged […]

Pyongyang: Official statements issued after talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made no mention of North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, a notable omission that analysts say could signal Beijing’s growing acceptance of Pyongyang’s nuclear status. Xi concluded his two-day visit to North Korea on Tuesday, saying he had reached an ‘important consensus’ with Kim on strengthening bilateral ties. The two leaders agreed to deepen diplomatic, military and economic cooperation and to place relations between their countries on a stronger footing. The absence of any reference to denuclearisation drew attention because the White House had said last month that Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump shared the goal of denuclearising North Korea following their meeting in Beijing. Analysts said the omission suggested that the summit may have prioritised strategic cooperation over efforts to curb Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions. North Korea reaffirmed its support for China’s One-China principle on Taiwan, while Xi called for expanded economic cooperation following the recent reopening of transport links between Beijing and Pyongyang after years of pandemic-related disruptions. Observers also noted North Korea’s rising international profile, bolstered by its growing ties with Russia and a series of diplomatic engagements with foreign […]

Boston : A federal judge has blocked the $100,000 fee imposed by President Donald Trump on new H-1B visas, ruling that the charge amounted to an unlawful tax that had not been authorised by Congress. U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin issued the decision in a lawsuit brought by 20 Democratic state attorneys general challenging the fee introduced by Trump last year. The administration had argued that the measure was intended to discourage companies from relying on foreign workers and encourage the hiring of Americans. The H-1B programme allows U.S. employers to hire highly skilled foreign workers, issuing 65,000 visas annually, along with an additional 20,000 visas for individuals holding advanced degrees. Before the fee increase, employers generally paid between $2,000 and $5,000 in visa-related charges. In his ruling, Sorokin concluded that the $100,000 payment functioned as a tax regardless of how it was described and that the president lacked the authority to impose it without congressional approval. The Trump administration had defended the policy as a lawful penalty under federal immigration laws and argued that courts should not intervene in the dispute. However, the judge rejected those arguments. The fee hike had reportedly discouraged visa applications, though administration officials previously […]

Updated GCC customs law brings fines and new exemptions framework New rules on customs clearance, duty refunds and traveller exemptions have been issued in Bahrain. Fines also cover cutting lead seals, removing customs seals, locks or ties, and removing covers from goods. The changes were issued by Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa under Decision No. 63 of 2026, amending the executive regulations of the GCC Unified Customs Law. They take effect the day after publication in the Official Gazette. Customs may now accept electronic papers for clearance if the owner of the goods or an authorised representative sends them. The sender must be approved by Customs, and the papers may be checked, certified, electronically signed or matched against originals. The decision also allows heavy machinery and equipment not available in local markets to enter temporarily for projects or for practical and scientific tests linked to them. The period is capped at three years, with room for extension by the director-general or his authorised representative. Foreign goods re-exported outside the GCC may have customs duties refunded in full or in part. The goods must be from one consignment, worth at least BD2,000, unused locally, and in the same […]

Businesses operating in the Al Mazra’a scrap yard have been granted additional time to relocate after the Southern Municipality extended the deadline to July 31, 2026. The decision follows directives from the ministerial committee for development projects and infrastructure, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, to support a smoother transition to the new site in Hafeera. Officials said the extension is intended to reduce pressure on businesses and ensure commercial and service activities continue without disruption during the relocation process. The municipality confirmed that the new site in Block 959 has been prepared in coordination with relevant government authorities to meet planning and technical requirements. Authorities said the first phase of the project aims to better organise scrap-related activities, improve safety standards and provide a more suitable working environment for operators. The new facility is also expected to enhance service efficiency, support long-term sustainability in the sector and allow room for future expansion.

Ministry of Labour organised a workshop to raise awareness about implementing Ministerial Decision No. (5) of 2026, which regulates the summer midday work ban. The decision, effective from June 15 until August 31, prohibits outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to safeguard workers during the peak summer heat. The workshop brought together employers, occupational safety and health officials, and private sector representatives to discuss the regulation’s requirements and necessary compliance measures. The ministry stated the initiative is part of its wider efforts to supervise the decision’s implementation and strengthen awareness of occupational health and safety standards during the summer months, when temperatures and humidity levels rise significantly. Officials also highlighted preventive measures and best practices aimed at reducing the risks of heat stress and creating a safer and more productive working environment.
