A Kuwaiti court has sentenced three defendants including an expatriate to five years in prison each on charges of involvement in a leak of crucial high school examinations, the latest such case in the country. The Criminal Court handed down the sentencing to two Kuwaiti citizens convicted of involvement in the exam leak via WhatsApp groups in return for money. The court issued the same sentence against an Egyptian expatriate, who was tried in absentia in connection to the same case, which was not clear when it surfaced. The rulings can be appealed. In December, a Kuwaiti court handed down varying jail terms to four people in a similar case. At the time, the Criminal Court sentenced two Kuwaitis – a man and a woman – to 10 and seven years in prison respectively in the case. Another Kuwaiti man and an expatriate were each given one year in jail in the same case. The defendants were charged with leaking classified information and forgery through involvement in online cheat groups targeting secondary school students. Last November, a Kuwaiti court sentenced a citizen and an expatriate to 10 years in prison each after convicting them of involvement in online leaking of […]

Moreover, the remittances registered a SR2.6 billion increase or a 28per cent rise in March compared to February of the current year. In February, the expat remittances in the kingdom dropped by 4 per cent against the same month last year, the lowest in more than four years. The February remittances decreased to reach around SR9.3 billion, the lowest monthly transfers since June 2019. The kingdom is home to a large community of migrant workers. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has stepped up efforts to provide jobs to its citizens as part of an employment policy known as “Saudisation”. Last May, the Saudi General Authority for Statistics, citing a recent census, put the kingdom’s total population at 32.2 million with foreigners making up around 13.4 million or 41.5 per cent. The Interior Ministry in Bahrain has successfully apprehended multiple individuals of Asian descent involved in fraudulent economic activities. These scams primarily targeted unsuspecting individuals by contacting them, seizing their bank accounts, and transferring funds outside the Kingdom. Upon receiving numerous reports regarding these fraudulent activities, law enforcement swiftly initiated search, investigation, and evidence-gathering operations. As a result, the perpetrators were identified, apprehended, and subjected to legal proceedings, with the case subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution. The General Administration of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security urges both citizens and residents to refrain from responding to such fraudulent calls. It’s important to note that banks will never request personal or banking information over the phone or other means. Individuals are advised to immediately contact their respective banks to halt account activities and file a report with the Economic Crimes Department if encounter fraud or deception. Reports can be lodged via the hotline 992, ensuring prompt action is taken to address the issue.

Bahrain’s Council of Representatives approved a draft law yesterday to prevent foreign workers with outstanding debts from leaving the country. This proposed legislation mandates that departing foreign workers must present a certificate confirming the absence of any outstanding debts before being allowed to exit Bahrain. The proposal received 24 votes in favour and two abstentions. Second Deputy Speaker Ahmed Qarata lauded the proposal, emphasising its role in safeguarding creditors’ interests and bolstering Bahrain’s financial stability. He stressed the need for regulations that protect business owners and curb fraudulent activities. The Ministry of Municipalities revealed that the total amount owed to creditors by foreign workers has reached BD5 million. However, similar to a proposal earlier this month, this draft law faces concerns regarding its potential impact on judicial discretion. Critics argue that prioritising debt settlement over deportation for foreign offenders, even in cases of serious crimes, could hinder judges’ ability to act in the best interest of public safety. In light of this, MP Jameel Mulla Hasan proposed the establishment of a judicial panel, similar to the system in the UAE. “Such a panel would aim to strike a balance between public and private interests, ensuring that Bahrain remains an attractive […]

An expatriate must undergo a medical test to obtain a resident identification card in Saudi Arabia, authorities have said. The General Directorate of Passports said that the medical test is among the requirements for a foreigner to be issued a resident ID via the government platform Absher or Muqeem portal for his/her employer after also paying the related fees. A fine of SR500 is slapped on the expatriate who fails to obtain the resident ID in a maximum of 90 days after entering the kingdom, the directorate noted. Saudi Arabia, a country of around 32.2 million people, is home to a large community of foreign workers. By Charlie H. Cooksey I can’t help but notice how societies, certainly those in the West, are becoming weaker. Never before have people been so “offended” or “hurt” by words and feelings and made so much noise about it. I say this because “problems and issues” we face today, are unfathomable or even laughable to those perhaps from the 20th century. Turn the clocks back and imagine the life of someone born in 1900 — WW1 breaks out when you’re 14 and ends with 22 million deaths. Shortly after, a truly deadly pandemic breaks out — Spanish Flu — it kills 50 million. If you come out of both of those alive, you’re still only 20. Then at 29, you face the Great Depression — causing worldwide unemployment, hunger and inflation. At age 33, the Nazis take power and at 39 WW2 kicks off, with around 60 million brutal deaths. Those who even managed to survive any of these wars lived a life of hunger, living on rations and often not knowing where the next meal would come from, watching loved ones die, and every other possible grief you could imagine. In fact, we probably can’t begin to imagine quite […]
