A Tiny Radioactive Battery Could Keep Your Future Phone Running for 50 Years

A Chinese company has developed a new nuclear battery that could keep your phone running for 50 years without charging. Betavolt Technology claims to have successfully miniaturized atomic energy batteries, which measure less than a coin at 15 x 15 x 5mm. The compact battery uses 63 nuclear isotopes to generate 100 microwatts and a voltage of 3V of electricity through the process of radioactive decay. The battery is currently in the pilot testing stage and Betavolt plans to mass-produce them for commercial devices like phones and drones, but also states nuclear batteries could be used for aerospace equipment, AI, medical equipment, advanced sensors, and micro-robots. The Beijing-based company claims to have drawn inspiration from devices such as pacemakers, and satellites. Betavolt is planning to boost its tech to produce a 1-watt battery by 2025. And while it still has some way to go, the company seems confident stating development is way ahead of European and American scientific research institutions and enterprises. This technology could revolutionize electronics by removing the need for chargers or portable power banks altogether creating devices that run continuously and whose batteries do not degrade in terms of capacity and lifespan over charging cycles in the way […]

Everything We Know About the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Coming in September 2024

In September 2024, Apple is rumored to be planning to introduce the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which will be sold alongside the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. The “Pro” models are the more expensive devices in Apple’s flagship lineup and are often the first to get new designs and features. We’re months away from the debut of the 2024 iPhones, but as is typical, leakers, analysts, and others with insider information are already sharing details on the new devices. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will increase in size, and this will be the first size update we’ve had in several years. The iPhone 16 Pro will measure in at 6.3 inches (up from 6.1), while the Pro Max will measure in at 6.9 inches (up from 6.7). The standard iPhone 16 models will not change in size. Apple is designing new A-series chips for the iPhone 16 Pro models, built on the latest N3E 3-nanometer node. We could see some improvements to efficiency and performance, but we haven’t yet heard details on just what we can expect. The Action Button that was initially limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 […]

Huge Ancient City Found in the Amazon

A huge ancient city has been found in the Amazon, hidden for thousands of years by lush vegetation. The discovery changes what we know about the history of people living in the Amazon. The houses and plazas in the Upano area in eastern Ecuador were connected by an astounding network of roads and canals. The area lies in the shadow of a volcano that created rich local soils but also may have led to the destruction of the society. While we knew about cities in the highlands of South America, like Machu Picchu in Peru, it was believed that people only lived nomadically or in tiny settlements in the Amazon. “This is older than any other site we know in the Amazon. We have a Eurocentric view of civilization, but this shows we have to change our idea about what is culture and civilization,” says Prof Stephen Rostain, director of investigation at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, who led the research. “It changes the way we see Amazonian cultures. Most people picture small groups, probably naked, living in huts and clearing land – this shows ancient people lived in complicated urban societies,” says co-author Antoine Dorison. The […]

Google Chrome Restricts Cookies in First Step Towards Elimination

Google has begun limiting third-party cookies for some users of its Chrome web browser, a first step towards eventually abandoning the files that have raised privacy concerns. Google, which announced in 2020 that it planned to get rid of cookies, said fully eliminating third-party cookies could only happen with the approval of Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority, which is looking at the impact on other businesses. “As per previously announced plans, Chrome is restricting third-party cookies by default for one percent of Chrome users to facilitate testing, and then ramping up to 100 percent of users from Q3 2024,” the company said in a blog posting that cited a Thursday start date. Cookies, small files which are used to target advertising by tracking web navigation, have recently been subject to greater regulation, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation introduced in 2016 as well as regulations in California. Third-party cookies are those placed by visited sites and not by the browser itself. Google announced in January 2020 that it would begin eliminating third-party cookies within two years, but the start has been delayed several times. Google has been working on an alternative system for Chrome that instead of tracking individual […]

iPhones Can Transform Into Soothing White Noise Machines With This Little-Known Feature

The calming sound of the ocean or a steady rainfall can be easily accessed on Apple iPhones with a white noise feature that some users initially never knew existed. For interested iPhone owners, they can go to settings, then accessibly and then audio/visual before finally clicking on background sounds, Apple instructs. From there, users can choose from six options: balanced noise, bright noise, dark noise, ocean, rain or stream while also adjusting the volume.   The background sound can also play while an iPhone user watches a video or plays music on their phone, Apple Support explains. If iPhone users want a quicker way to reach those soothing sounds, it can set up a shortcut by clicking accessibility in settings and accessibility shortcut where background sound is an option. Then the user can triple-click the home button or side button to start playing the background noise. The existence of the feature seems to have caught a number of iPhone owners off guard. “Just found out iPhone has a built in white noise setting? No one told me that,” one person wrote on X last month. A third social media user said: “tiktok just taught me that my iphone has a built in […]

Smartphone Manufacturers Still Want To Make Foldables a Thing

Every large smartphone maker except Apple is betting that “foldable” phones will help revive a lacklustre mobile market, despite the devices still largely failing to attract mainstream consumers. Foldables, which have a screen that opens like a book or compact mirror, barely exceed a 1 percent market share of all smartphones sold globally, almost five years after they were first introduced. But Samsung has doubled down on the product, investing heavily in marketing this year. In July, the Korean group released its 5G Galaxy Z series. The world’s largest smartphone manufacturer points to estimates from Counterpoint Research that foldable devices may surpass a third of all smartphones costing more than $600 by 2027. “We will continue to position our foldables as a key engine for our flagship growth with the clear differentiation, experience, and flexibility these devices have to offer,” said Samsung. Other handset makers, such as Motorola, China’s Huawei and its spin-off Honour, are also pinning their hopes on the product helping to revive a market that suffered its worst year for more than a decade. “This is the year people [in the industry] really dived in,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight. “Everybody now is betting […]

I Ditched My Android for an iPhone 15 for a Week – And Apple Has Some Work To Do

Although I’ve tested iPhones for review—most recently with my iPhone 15 Plus review and iPhone 15 Pro review—outside of reviewing, my personal usage predominantly takes place on Android phones and has done so for years. I like the flexibility and customizability of the platform and the ability to address shortcomings or personalise with third-party apps and tools in a way that simply doesn’t exist on the iPhone. Its interoperability with a wider array of devices / OSes, be it iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows PCs, or other Android phones and tablets, is unquestionably superior too. Even Android’s file management offers greater control and versatility (don’t @ me). That said, I’m often curious about what it would be like to live on the other side of this divide more wholeheartedly. Can I fully embrace Apple’s smartphone of the moment or will I miss the Android way of things too much? What barriers might I run into and, conversely, which aspects of the iPhone and iOS experience might I prefer? Jumping from Google’s latest and greatest Pixel 8 Pro to the most modest member of Apple’s best iPhones of 2023 might seem like a step-down. But as first impressions go, the iPhone 15 […]
