Ukrainians have remains steadfast in their belief in victory against Russia through much of the aftermath of the invasion that started in February 2022. Now, two years on, this foundation is starting to shake. Survey data released by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology shows that while almost 70 percent of Ukrainians said shortly after the beginning of the war that their country was moving in the right direction, this was now diminished to just 44 percent. As Statista’s Katharina Buchholz shows below, the share of respondents saying the country was going the wrong way increased in the same time frame from just 16 percent to 46 percent. After Ukraine’s long-awaited counter-offensive fell flat in 2023, the new year started with bad news for the country’s defense forces as Russia was winning back territory amid resupply issues from Ukraine’s Western allies. The growing discontent is also showing in other surveys by the institute, albeit slower. Also in February, only 60 percent of Ukrainians said their country would definitely win the war and 29 percent said that it likely would. This is a low result for Ukraine considering that in May 2022, 80 percent were certain of victory and a further […]

Pakistan is mulling over completing a much-delayed pipeline project with Iran, which has been stalled for years and has failed to move forward due to US sanctions. Islamabad is considering finalizing the first phase of the 80-kilometer pipeline, according to Pakistani news site The Nation. “Islamabad is contemplating to kick-off construction work on the 80 kilometers portion of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project… to escape a potential penalty of $18 billion,” the report said. “Pakistan will submit an application to seek a waiver of US sanctions for the IP project. Initially, it has been decided that in the first phase of the IP project, work on the 80 km portion from the Pak–Iran border to Gwadar will be started,” a source in the Pakistani energy ministry told the outlet. The project, which aims to connect the Pakistani port city of Gwadar to the Iranian border, was launched in 2013. It required Pakistan to complete the construction of its end of the pipeline by 2014. Iran said it has already completed its side of the pipeline and has invested $2 billion in the project. Pakistani officials warned in May last year that Islamabad could face an $18 billion fine if it fails to complete the Iran–Pakistan Gas Pipeline project. Islamabad suspended its participation in the […]

US prosecutors have charged an alleged member of the Japanese mafia with conspiring to traffic nuclear materials. Takeshi Ebisawa, 60, tried to sell uranium and plutonium that he believed would be transferred to Iran to build a nuclear bomb, it is alleged. Mr Ebisawa and a Thai co-defendant were previously hit with weapons and drug charges in April 2022. He faces life imprisonment if convicted of the latest charges. US authorities say Mr Ebisawa – who is being held in a Brooklyn jail – is a senior figure in the Japanese organised crime syndicate, known as the Yakuza, with operations in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and the US. The US Department of Justice said Mr Ebisawa and his “confederates showed samples of nuclear materials in Thailand” to an undercover agent from the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The agent was posing as a drugs and weapons trafficker with links to an Iranian general. The nuclear samples – which came from Myanmar – were seized by Thai authorities and transferred to US investigators. A US laboratory confirmed the material contained uranium and weapons-grade plutonium. Prosecutors also allege that Mr Ebisawa sought to acquire large quantities of military-grade weapons on behalf of […]

Dozens of archaeological sites in Afghanistan have been bulldozed to allow systematic looting, according to researchers at the University of Chicago. They say their analysis of satellite photos provides the first definitive photographic evidence that looting patterns that began under the previous government have continued since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Ancient settlements dating back to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age – some earlier than 1000BC – are among those they say have been damaged. Most of the sites identified are in northern Afghanistan’s Balkh region, which more than two millennia ago was the heartland of Bactria. It was one of the richest and most populous regions of ancient Afghanistan under the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th Century BC. By 327BC, Alexander the Great had conquered the region and married a Bactrian woman named Roxana, after defeating the Achaemenid ruler. Located on a major east-west Silk Route, the region’s central city Bactra – later called Balkh – has been a centre of both the Zoroastrian faith and Buddhist learning. It later became an important Islamic city. The researchers from the University of Chicago’s Center for Cultural Heritage Preservation have identified more than 29,000 archaeological sites across Afghanistan, helped […]

A record 7.3 million illegal aliens have crossed the southwest border under President Biden’s watch, a number which is greater than the population of 36 individual states. That figure is sourced from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which has already reported 961,537 Southwest land border encounters in the current fiscal year, which runs from October through September, and if the current pace of illegal immigration does not slow down, fiscal year 2024 will break last year’s record of 2,475,669 southwest border encounters — a number that by itself exceeds the population of New Mexico. The total number of southwest land border encounters since Biden assumed office in 2021 is 7,298,486, CBP data shows. That number is larger than the population of 36 U.S. states including: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. In fact, the only states that are not in danger of being “replaced” are the blue ones. Compared to the largest U.S. states, the 7.3 million number is about 18.7% of California’s population of 39 million, […]

China has let its frustration be known after the US was the lone veto to Tuesday’s UN Security Council vote urging a ceasefire in Gaza, which would have brought immense international pressure to bear on Israel to stop its offensive. The UN text called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” and was proposed by Algeria for the 15-member Security Council’s approval. It was seen as having widespread Arab backing. The vote was 13-1 with the UK abstaining and the US being the lone ‘no’ vote, which is a familiar pattern historically on Israel-related issues. China’s envoy to the UN has said the US stance is tantamount to handing Israel a “license to kill” as it’s “nothing different from giving the green light to the continued slaughter,” according to the words of Chinese Ambassador to teh UN Zhang Jun. “The U.S. veto sends a wrong message, pushing the situation in Gaza into a more dangerous one,” said Zhang further, at a moment the death toll in Gaza is approaching 30,000 – according to Palestinian sources. Zhang also denounced the official US excuse and justification for the no vote, which said the resolution if passed would interfere with sensitive ongoing diplomatic negotiations to achieve peace and free the hostages. According to more […]

Exxon has warned the European Union that it will leave and take billions of dollars in climate investment with it unless Brussels makes it easier to spend those billions on transition-related projects. The company today as saying that there was way too much red tape in the EU and it took too long to get a project going, which prompted the supermajor to consider spending its $20 billion in decarbonization investments for 2022-2027 elsewhere. “When we make investments, we’ve got very long time horizons in mind. I would say that recent developments in Europe have not instilled confidence in long-term, predictable policies,” Karen McKee, president of Exxon Product Solutions. “What we’re experiencing is the deindustrialisation of the European economy and we’re concerned,” McKee also said. The European Union’s leadership has promised time and again it will facilitate transition projects but it seems it has been slow to act on this promise. According to Exxon—and a lot of other companies involved in the transition—getting a project off the ground in the EU is fraught with regulatory obstacles and “slow and torturous” permitting and funding procedures, per Exxon’s McKee. The EU’s Green Deal plan features a “predictable and simplified regulatory environment” as […]
