Colm McLoughlin, the former Executive Vice Chairman & CEO Dubai Duty Free, passed away on October 30, according to local media reports. He was 81 years old.
Born in Ireland, McLoughlin’s journey began in 1983 when he joined the consultancy team from Aer Rianta and the Irish Airport Authority after the Dubai Government contracted them to launch the duty-free operation.
On joining Dubai Duty Free, McLoughlin revolutionised the industry, thus transforming Dubai International Airport (DXB) into a global retail destination.

Under his exceptional leadership, the organisation experienced unprecedented growth, becoming one of the world’s largest duty-free retailers. He progressed from General Manager to Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, and the business grew from $20 million in 1984 to $2.16 billion in 2023.
His strategic vision and unwavering commitment to excellence propelled Dubai Duty Free to new heights, making it a major contributor to Dubai’s economy.
In 2024, after four decades of leading Dubai Duty Free, the visionary leader announced his retirement. However, he continued to maintain an advisory role and remain as Chairman of the Dubai Duty Free Foundation until his death.
Beyond his professional achievements, McLoughlin was admired for his warm personality, humility, and philanthropic endeavours. He was deeply committed to giving back to the community and supported numerous charitable causes.
The organisation has earned 780 awards, with McLoughlin receiving 86 of these honours. His accolades include the ‘Most Distinguished Employee Award’ from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and the ‘Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award’ from President Michael D. Higgins. Middlesex University Dubai awarded McLoughlin an honorary doctorate in 2017. McLoughlin was also honoured at the Arabian Business Achievement Awards in January 2024 with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
McLoughlin’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of retail leaders. His impact on the duty-free industry and the city of Dubai is immeasurable.
