Coronavirus Affects Mental Health Too

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a very distressing time for all of us. The fear and anxiety that comes along with the virus can be overwhelming for all ages.

The pandemic has increased uncertainty over the economy, employment, finances as well as physical and mental health. Furthermore, precautionary measures like social distancing made people feel isolated.

Whatever your circumstances, there are ways to help manage your fear, stress, and anxiety and protect your mental health. Here are some of them:

Avoid speculation and get your information through reliable sources
Having access to good quality information about the virus can help you feel more in control.

Find your balance in staying informed
There is extensive news coverage about the outbreak. If you find that the news is causing you huge stress, it’s important to find a balance.

Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.

Keep in touch with friends and family
At times of stress, we work better in company and with support. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling. While social distancing measures are in place, consider connecting online, through social media, or by phone or mail.

Call your healthcare provider
People with pre-existing mental health conditions may be particularly vulnerable in an emergency.  If stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row, call your healthcare provider.

Get immediate help during a crisis:
For emergencies, call 999.
For COVID-19 related emergencies, call 444.
