Wuhan to test whole city of 11 million population in 10 days
Wuhan, the Chinese city where the global coronavirus pandemic first started, has ordered officials to prepare to test its entire population of 11 million after the city reported a handful of new infections.
Millions of people in Wuhan will be tested for the novel coronavirus within the coming days, after a new cluster of cases emerged despite a strict 76-day lockdown that was intended to eliminate the virus from the central Chinese city.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Monday there are about seven or eight “top” candidates for a vaccine to combat the coronavirus and work on them is being accelerated.
At a White House press conference on Monday, US President Donald Trump said “we have prevailed” even as his country’s deaths from the disease passed 80,000. Mr Trump later said his remark pertained only to testing for the infection.
Globally the number of confirmed cases has passed 4.1 million, with the death toll reaching 285,000. More than 1.4 million have recovered from the virus.
