Learn how AUBH diversifies its academic porfolio

Gulf Insiders talks to Dr. Susan E. Saxton, Founding President of the American University of Bahrain. What’s new at AUBH? We are so excited to welcome 2021 with new degrees, new students and new partnerships! It is an exciting time at AUBH. Not only were we able to welcome students back on our beautiful campus last fall, thanks to our dual-modality learning experience and outdoor activities and events, but we also have three new undergraduate programs and three new graduate programs in the pipeline and under approval with HEC. Today, we are of course offering our learning experience online, in line with the Council for Higher Education’s directives until March 14th, however, hope to welcome our students back on campus as soon as it’s possible to do so. Adding to our list of recent accomplishments is that we are now welcoming international students from fourteen different countries, adding to our already diverse student body. AUBH is receiving a growing number of transfer students who wish to continue an American-style education in the GCC. These are students who started their education abroad, but now with our innovative academic approach, they are choosing to study closer to home. Last year we announced […]

Academic Excellence – An Interview with Dr. Susan E. Saxton, American University of Bahrain

Gulf Insider talks to Dr. Susan E. Saxton, Founding President of the American University of Bahrain. How is your organization contributing to the development of the Kingdom of Bahrain? In general, the AUBH quality of American-style education mirrors that of the best universities in the United States, and we are the first of our kind in the Kingdom. Through our unique academic philosophy, students will be equipped to identify their interests and passion and focus their attention on following the path they find personally suitable. This approach runs through everything we do, and so creates a unique caliber of graduate which AUBH will become synonymous with in Bahrain. What makes your University special? Many things! True to our Americanstyle curriculum, with AUBH, students can change their mind with regards to their major. They have two years of general education courses common across all colleges, giving them the skills to be productive, to find their own resources, to self-assess. We discovered that this way we can enable students to find their real passions rather than being forced to choose a path too early – they ‘learn to learn.’ We envision a new league of graduates, empowered with the ability to think […]

Enriching Holistic Education – The British School of Bahrain

Known for offering a prestigious, holistic, UK based education, the British School of Bahrain is continuously innovating their practices to further develop the quality of education they are providing. With the support of Inspired, a global educational group of over 65 schools, BSB is supporting the development of education for all children and young people within Bahrain. When asked about what makes their school special, BSB said that their school is a caring and supportive community that places the child at the centre of all decisions. “The School strives to offer a vibrant and diverse international culture of endeavour and scholarship that empowers every child. Through this, we will encourage strong moral values and a feeling of community spirit”, they shared. For BSB, four factors have stood out as contributing to their success in 2020: the importance of collaboration, supportive parents who trust the school, resilient and grateful students, and a clear focus on longer term improvements. “While all schools have had to face the challenges that 2020 has thrown at them. BSB has continued to shine as a beacon of excellence not just within Bahrain, but within the international community. The success of our developments has been for the […]

Bahrain: St Christopher’s School celebrates its 60th anniversary

Gulf Insider speaks with Dr. Simon Watson, Principal of St Christopher’s School, as they celebrate their 60th year anniversary. Dr. Simon Watson gives Gulf Insider some insight into St Christopher’s School past, it’s present, and its visions for the future. St Christopher’s School is celebrating its 60th year anniversary. Are there any traditions that the school has carried on since its beginning in 1961? The biggest tradition is providing high-quality education for the students. That’s been important right from the very beginning. It was established and set up to provide education for expats living on the island. As time went on, the school moved from strength to strength, and consolidated the Infant and Junior School in Saar and Senior School in Isa Town. We are rooted in the community; we’ve been around for 60 years and have strong connections with Bahrain. We are making sure that we give back to the community by providing help and support in different ways. We hold different events at the school, like charity events to help and support other schools in Bahrain, as well as those who are less fortunate. The students really get involved and it’s a big part of the school. So […]

The evolving role of technology in education

Gulf Insider talks to Mr. William Hurt, Chief Operating Officer of the American University of Bahrain on digital transformation, FinTech, and the evolving role of technology in education. What is the scope for digital transformation in education and what are the risks associated with it? The scope for digital transformation in education is as wide or narrow as institutions want to make it. AUBH came into existence at the peak of digital transformation in the region, facilitating our ability to become a leader in the field. As a start-up institution, we are inherently dynamic and we had invested heavily in technology from the beginning. We believe in the power of digital education to reach students in a profound and engaging way, enhancing their education through greater access to learning materials, instructors, and other students. As a result, our entire campus and our teaching models have been specifically developed to use the most advanced educational technology available. The risks of migrating to a primarily digital platform are twofold. First, not everyone has access to the required technology. Students who don’t have the right device at home to access programs such as Adobe Photoshop, etc., would not be able participate fully in live […]

Leading towards a lifetime of success

Gulf Insider interviews Dr. Susan E. Saxton, Founding President of the American University of Bahrain. When did you realize the pandemic was about to impact your day-to-day life and work? What immediate actions did you take and how ready was AUBH to adopt these actions? COVID-19 has changed the way that institutions globally deliver education, and the way that students approach their futures. As soon as we saw the pandemic take hold in Europe, we pro-actively mobilized our technological tools to be ready to move to an online modality. AUBH, as an institution, is in a fortunate position due to the structure of our business as a start-up, which means that we are naturally able to adapt and change very quickly. We moved to distance learning seamlessly, without missing any class time. I’m pleased that all of us, including staff, students, and support teams, have demonstrated the ability and desire to adapt and try new teaching and learning methodologies. We added measures to assist students who have had to return from studying abroad, who may not have access to all the necessary documents due to exam disruption. Being a recognized Cambridge English testing center, we were also able to offer applicants […]

Survive or Thrive? Helping young people to be happy during a pandemic

At the start of a new academic year with COVID 19 continuing to affect the education of millions of students, as we continue to battle with the challenges and seize the opportunities, we are becoming more aware of the social and emotional impact of the pandemic on our young people. During these times, teachers across the region are doing their very best for their students, working hard to support their learning. In this new school year, we, at Britus Education, have a significant percentage of our students in Dubai, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia learning online, interacting with their teachers and peers ‘at a distance’. However, students are also in school and it has been my pleasure to visit classrooms and see children learning and enjoying the new term. However, there is something uncomfortable about watching a group of socially distanced children wearing masks and visors interact with each other and with their teacher. The current circumstances remind us very clearly that there is so much more to education than learning new knowledge – how can we, during a pandemic, provide our children with the social and emotional context to thrive and enjoy life? Whilst there may be a dearth of […]
