In kindergarten classrooms, where children first learn language, behavior, and discipline, teachers play a role that goes far beyond teaching. They provide care, guidance, and emotional support, spending long hours working with young children who require patience and constant attention. Despite the importance of this foundational role, many kindergarten teachers continue to face difficult living and working conditions. According to data from the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, more than 41% of kindergarten teachers earn less than BD150 per month, even though around 60% hold a professional diploma in early childhood education. These figures highlight a clear gap between teachers’ qualifications and responsibilities on one side, and their financial compensation on the other. The sector is largely run by private institutions and does not have a legally binding minimum wage. While some explanations point to market supply and demand and to regulated school fees, teachers report ongoing challenges such as seasonal and unstable contracts, unpaid periods during school holidays, and practices that affect their job security and mental well-being. At the same time, MPs have repeatedly called for legislation to address the issue by setting a fair minimum wage, ensuring job continuity, and providing social insurance. Although wage support […]

Dr. Fatima Al-Kooheji, member of the Women and Children Committee in the Shura Council, said that kindergarten jobs in Bahrain are influenced by supply and demand, similar to other businesses in the country. She explained that the Ministry of Education approves tuition fees based on information provided by the educational institution, including factors such as the building, teachers’ qualifications, and the educational level offered at the kindergarten. Regarding kindergarten teacher salaries, Dr. Al-Kooheji noted that pay depends on the teacher’s qualifications. Teachers with a high school diploma earn less than those holding a bachelor’s degree. She added that the “Tamkeen” program supports kindergarten teacher salaries, but this assistance is limited to a specific period. On the topic of raising salaries, Dr. Al-Kooheji clarified that educational institutions cannot increase tuition fees without the Ministry of Education’s approval. The ministry requires that any fee increase be linked to improving the educational level offered at the kindergarten.

A graduate spends about four years building knowledge and critical thinking skills. Their degree shows real achievement and proves they can handle tough challenges. However, in today’s market, career readiness is a continuous process that requires translating that academic foundation into practical skills for the most in-demand jobs in Bahrain. General Assembly (GA) Bahrain addresses those needs by providing the technical expertise and hands-on experience that employers now demand as a standard. The Evolution of Learning The job market moves fast, and staying competitive requires effort beyond formal education. Successful professionals understand that a degree is a starting point, but a Bootcamp is the finish line for those looking to future-proof their careers. By focusing on hard skills that appear in modern job descriptions, General Assembly helps graduates turn their academic theory into professional proficiency. Training That Complements Education Bootcamps focus on getting people job-ready quickly. Programmes in software engineering, data science, UX design, and AI pack months of hands-on learning into intensive weeks of real projects, industry tools, and work that belongs in a portfolio. Since 2022, GA has graduated over 2,500 people who’ve moved forward in their careers. Here’s what’s interesting: roughly 40% of those graduates had no […]

Dubai schools will close early on Fridays, starting in January 2026, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). The early finish time for private schools in the emirate comes after the UAE announced earlier Friday prayer timings at mosques in the country from 2026 onwards. To accommodate the changes, the KHDA reported that schools will finish no later than 11.30am on Fridays. New school timings in Dubai A press statement from the KHDA said: “In line with the adjustment of the Friday prayer time across the country to 12.45pm, and following consultations with educational institutions, effective Friday, January 9, 2026, all private schools and early childhood centres operating within private schools in Dubai will finish the school day no later than 11.30am on Fridays.” Education authorities and providers are consulting with parents over the possibility of providing remote learning lessons for secondary school students on Fridays. The KHDA said: “For students in Grade 6 (Year 7) and above, schools may seek approval to offer online learning on Fridays, subject to parental consultation and KHDA approval”. Teaching timings and school start and finish times from Monday to Thursday will not be impacted. The UAE announced new timings for Friday […]

Expo City Dubai has launched a new graduate development programme for UAE Nationals, aimed at building future leaders in real estate and sustainable urban development. The Exposure programme, introduced by Expo City Dubai’s Real Estate and Development division, is a tailored, two-year initiative designed for fresh Emirati graduates. It is intended to equip participants with practical experience, technical skills and leadership capabilities across the full real estate value chain. The programme supports Expo City’s role as a master developer and aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the D33 Economic Agenda, both of which prioritise sustainable growth, innovation and the integration of Emirati talent into the workforce. Expo City said the initiative would help bridge the gap between academic study and professional leadership, while contributing to the UAE’s transition to a knowledge-based economy. Open to UAE Nationals who have graduated within the past two years, the programme targets candidates from disciplines including urban planning, engineering and business. Participants will rotate through multiple functions during the first year, including design and development, project delivery, sales and marketing, programme controls and procurement. An exclusive conversation on the vision for the American University of Bahrain with Dr Wafa Almansoori. American writer Alvin Toffler once said: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be the one who cannot read and write, but the one who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” During our recent conversation with Dr Wafa Almansoori, the American University of Bahrain’s Interim President and Provost, she made it a point to reiterate Toffler’s words. According to Dr Almansoori, opportunities unfold for every graduate when they’re more willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Dr Almansoori has spent a lifetime working in the Kingdom’s higher education sector. Her contributions are wide-ranging. She helped establish Bahrain’s Quality Assurance Authority whilst building her academic career in Electrical Engineering. As a founding member of AUBH’s leadership team, she shaped the university’s academic programs, secured international accreditation, and worked closely with the Higher Education Council. In our chat with Dr Almansoori, we discussed what’s changed in the higher education space, what students in Bahrain want from their education today, and how her perspective to education has changed as she now leads the university. What’s the most significant shift you’re seeing in higher education in Bahrain right now? […]

In a sign of just how fast the demographic situation is developing in Austria, Vienna has hit a major new milestone, marking the first time that more than half the first-grade population do not understand German. The news highlights just how dramatic the demographic crisis facing Europe is, which has seen falling educational standards across the continent, in large part due to mass immigration. “For the first time, more than half of the first-graders in Vienna’s public elementary schools do not understand German,” the Vienna People’s Party reported on Friday. The data shows that 50.9 percent of first-graders, or 10,931 students, must be classified as special needs students in the current school year. This already comes after reports from last year that over 75 percent of students in Vienna’s middle school system do not speak German at home, choosing another foreign language instead. However, it was already clear that it would pass the 50 percent mark last year, when it was listed at the 49.7 percent mark. Education spokesperson and parliamentary group leader Harald Zierfuß blames the ruling left-liberal government, saying, “Because the SPÖ and NEOS are failing in Vienna, more children than ever before are unable to speak German.” […]
