UAE: Smuggling attempt of 216 kgs of drugs foiled
The Anti-Narcotics Department of the General Command of Sharjah Police, in coordination with Abu Dhabi and Umm Al Quwain Police, thwarted, in a qualitative operation called Precious Hunt, an international plan to smuggle 216 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances through one of the seaports in the country, for the purpose of promoting and trafficking.
Lieutenant Colonel Majed Al Asam, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department of Sharjah Police, said: “The Precious Hunt operation comes within the framework of the efforts made by the Sharjah Police, to thwart the plane of drug traffickers to spread their poisons among the youth of the country.”
In detail, Lieutenant Colonel Al Assam stated that they received reliable source information indicating there were gangsters outside the country who planned to smuggle and promote narcotic substances to the UAE. He added that a specialised team was formed to monitor and analyse the data, until teams identified the main recipient, an Asian member of the gang, who came to the UAE through one of the airports.
Al Asam added that the specialised team placed the accused under close observation around the clock in preparation for his arrest. The suspect reportedly resided in a popular house in one of the neighbouring emirates which he used to store the drugs.
After investigation, the date and place of receiving the shipment on one of the emirate’s beaches was defined. The suspect planned to store it in his residence, which was raided and he was arrested.
In the house, 216 kilogrammes of narcotics were found, including 170 kilogrammes of hashish, 46 kilogrammes of crystal, and 500,000 Captagon tablets.
By interrogating the suspect, he confessed that the drugs belonged to four gangs and the investigation is still underway to apprehend the rest of the gangsters.
The Director of the Anti Narcotics Department indicated that the Sharjah Police have anti-drug teams with a high level of professionalism, who are ready to deal with any case in various circumstances.
