Amid ongoing regional tensions that have disrupted parts of the Middle East’s air travel network, the UAE’s national railway operator, Etihad Rail, has stepped in to assist stranded travellers by operating exceptional passenger services across the country’s western corridor.

Working under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre, the railway operator arranged special services between Al Ghuwaifat Station in the Al Dhafra region and Al Faya Station in Abu Dhabi. The operation enabled the safe and efficient transport of more than 350 passengers, despite the passenger rail network not yet having officially launched its commercial services.

The trains were deployed as part of a coordinated response following the temporary suspension of several flight routes linked to the broader regional situation. Officials said the effort was carried out in close cooperation with authorities in Saudi Arabia, helping to streamline cross-border procedures and accelerate the transfer of passengers.

Authorities described the initiative as part of a structured national response to rapidly evolving regional developments. Emergency protocols and pre-approved safety plans were activated immediately, allowing the railway to operate smoothly while ensuring high standards of safety and operational discipline.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances, freight services across the UAE’s national railway network continued without interruption, maintaining scheduled cargo movements in accordance with official directives.

Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre, said the operation demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the country’s crisis-response framework.

“The operation of passenger services before their official launch reflects a high degree of institutional flexibility,” he said, noting that authorities had redeployed existing capabilities to address immediate public needs without affecting long-term operational plans or logistical security.

He added that the response underscored the strategic value of the UAE’s national railway network, which he said had proved capable of responding quickly to shifting regional conditions.

Eng. Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, described the services as an exceptional measure taken to support national stability during a period of uncertainty.

“We are proud to operate these passenger services as an exceptional response to the current regional situation,” he said. “They demonstrate the technical and operational readiness of the national railway network, as well as the competence and adaptability of the national workforce.”

Additional services have been scheduled to facilitate passenger movement, officials said, and operations will continue in coordination with relevant authorities until normal air traffic resumes.

The emergency deployment of rail transport highlights how Abu Dhabi’s crisis-management system relies on institutional coordination and the rapid mobilisation of alternatives when traditional transport networks are disrupted.

For the UAE, officials say, the episode reinforces confidence in the resilience of national infrastructure — and its ability to maintain essential services even amid uncertain regional conditions.
