Bahrain: Fake Sorcerer To Be Sentenced for Robbing Couple of Wealth
A fake sorcerer who conned a couple of BD 100,000 in cash as well as jewellery, cars, and land had his sentencing adjourned to July 5 by the Lower Criminal Court. The victims’ lawyer stated that the defendant deluded them under the guise of spiritual healing.
The husband initially rejected the idea; however, following a neck operation, his wife brought him oil and honey from the defendant, which she applied to his injury. He felt cured and decided to deal further with the defendant.
The defendant told them that their daughter was being followed by a “Jinn” (aka Genie), who was causing her harm. Further, he informed them that some land they owned in Diraz had been desecrated. He suggested that they transfer its ownership to his name to undo the magic and that he would later retransfer it to them once it was safe. He brought him oils and honey, and the victims supposedly responded to all his requests after consuming these.
After a while, the defendant told the wife that her gold jewellery was cursed and had to be treated since it could not be sold. He took BD7,000 worth of gold and did not return it. He claimed that her co-workers used black magic against her and demanded money to undo its effect.
He received sums of money ranging between BD50 and BD300 several times for his “services.” On one occasion, the defendant asked the couple for BD9,000 and threatened to otherwise harm them.
They were only able to collect BD7,000, so he asked the husband to sell his car to cover the remaining amount, despite its value being BD4,000. He justified this by claiming the car was possessed by a Jinn and could not be sold; however, the defendant was seen driving it after a while. Furthermore, he always provided vague reasoning behind his requests and alleged that providing details would bring them harm.
