Kuwait Considers Introducing VAT

Kuwait is weighing the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) as Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations continue to reform their tax frameworks to diversify revenue sources and align with global standards, local media reported.  The VAT adoption follows similar measures by other GCC countries, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which have increased their VAT rates to 15% and 10%, respectively. Qatar and Kuwait are expected to introduce VAT soon, further diversifying income beyond oil revenues. VAT was introduced across the UAE since 2018 at a standard rate of 5%. The introduction of VAT represents a pivotal step in the region’s economic transformation, providing governments with additional revenue to reinvest in infrastructure, public services, and sustainable development. These efforts align with broader global trends as GCC nations modernize their economies and reduce dependence on hydrocarbons. In addition to VAT, GCC countries are implementing the OECD-endorsed global minimum corporate tax rate of 15%, targeting multinational corporations with revenues exceeding €750 million. This measure is designed to curb tax avoidance and ensure fair contributions from companies operating in historically low-tax jurisdictions, such as Dubai and Manama. The UAE has already introduced a 9% corporate tax for businesses with profits above AED 375,000, while maintaining exemptions […]

Bahrainis To Replace Expats In Government Hospitals

The Ministry of Health has outlined a plan to replace foreign workers with Bahraini nationals in government hospitals, according to its response to a parliamentary committee investigating job nationalization in the public and private sectors. As per the Ministry’s response, 36% of the workforce in government hospitals—1,951 employees—are foreign nationals. This includes 111 doctors, 1,738 nurses, 85 support staff, and 17 administrative staff. Between 2020 and 2023, 594 Bahrainis were hired in government hospitals, alongside 930 foreign nationals, leading to a 44% increase in foreign employment. However, 672 foreign employees also left during the same period. The Ministry attributed the challenges of replacing foreign workers to several factors, including: A shortage of Bahraini applicants.Insufficient graduates in specialized fields.Retirement of Bahraini staff.Reluctance among Bahraini graduates to work in government hospitals.Focus on Key Specializations The Ministry’s replacement plan targets several key specializations, including: Anesthesiology: 29 positions.Accident and Emergency: 21 positions.Intensive Care Unit (ICU): 10 positions.Internal Medicine: 10 positions.General Surgery: 9 positions.Radiology: 9 positions.Neurology: 7 positions.Gynecology: 6 positions.Orthopedics: 4 positions.Pathology: 4 positions.HBDC (Hematology and Blood Diseases Centre): 1 position. The plan’s success is contingent on several factors, including securing sufficient budget, ensuring the availability of qualified Bahraini graduates, maintaining current service levels, and addressing […]

Halt Heavy Vehicles During Peak Hours On King Hamad Highway

A proposal to restrict heavy vehicles on King Hamad Highway during peak hours has received preliminary backing from the Ministry of Interior. The ministry stated that its response is initial, with a more detailed official stance to be provided in the government’s memorandum. If passed, the proposal would prohibit heavy vehicles from using King Hamad Highway between 6:30 AM and 8:00 AM, and between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The proposal, put forward by MP Lulwa Al Rumaihi, aims to regulate the movement of trucks and heavy vehicles, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. Al Rumaihi argues that the measure would improve road safety, as heavy vehicles— often transporting materials like rocks and industrial goods—pose a significant danger to other road users. The Foreign Affairs, Defence, and National Security Committee has reviewed and recommended the proposal for approval. If implemented, the restriction is expected to improve traffic flow and greatly enhance safety for commuters during peak times.

Al Ittihad Held To 1-1 Draw By Al Fayha, Lose Saudi League Top Spot

Al Ittihad surrendered their position atop the Roshn Saudi League standings after being held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Al Fayha at King Abdullah Sports City in Buraidah on Saturday. A cagey first half made way for an eventful second period, with both teams creating moments of tension and drama. Despite Al Ittihad dominating large spells, Laurent Blanc’s men failed to capitalize on two penalties, ultimately salvaging a point through a late equalizer. The game’s turning point seemed imminent 12 minutes into the second half when Al Ittihad were awarded a penalty following a handball by Al Fayha’s Spanish midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo. However, Karim Benzema, aiming to edge closer to the league’s top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic, was thwarted by Al Fayha goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, who pulled off an impressive save. Benzema came close to redeeming himself in the 65th minute. The French striker broke free down the left and attempted a delicate lob over Mosquera, but his effort sailed narrowly wide of the far post. The drama heightened in the 86th minute when Al Ittihad earned another penalty after Chris Smalling handled a cross inside the box. This time, Houssem Aouar stepped up, but Mosquera once again emerged as […]

They were riding their bike on an internal road when the car hit them from behind. The police said distracted driving caused the accident, adding that the car’s 37-year-old driver has been arrested. On being alerted about the accident, police patrols and paramedics rushed to the spot, but the girls had died by then due to the critical injuries they sustained in the crash. Distracted driving is among the major causes of deadly crashes in the UAE, accounting for about 25 per cent of all road fatalities in the country. The traffic offence is punishable by a Dh800 fine and four black points. The RAK Police have urged drivers to avoid all forms of distractions while driving, warning of potential accidents that they could result in. Bahrain: MPs to Revisit Proposal for Tougher Penalties on Reckless Drivers

A proposal to impose tougher penalties on reckless drivers responsible for fatal crashes is back for parliamentary discussion this Tuesday, following its review in October. The amendment calls for a minimum six-month jail sentence and fines between BD 2,000 and BD 6,000. However, it has faced strong opposition from the Ministry of Interior, which questions the practicality and narrow scope of the proposal. Supported by five MPs—Abdulla Al Rumaihi, Abdulhakim Al Sheno, Ali Al Doseri, Najeeb Al Kuwari, and Waleed Al Doseri—the amendment targets dangerous driving behaviours such as reckless overtaking and misuse of emergency lanes, which are often linked to fatal accidents. The Ministry of Interior argues that the proposal could undermine judges’ ability to consider individual circumstances by imposing mandatory minimum penalties. The ministry also criticised the vague wording in the amendment, particularly terms like ‘security and safety,’ which it believes could lead to inconsistent enforcement. The committee reviewing the proposal has recommended rejecting it, citing existing laws—such as Article 342 of the Penal Code—that already address reckless driving leading to fatalities.

Fear of First Wife Leads to Divorce for Bahraini Man Who Abandoned Family Abroad

The High Sharia Appeals Court has granted a divorce to an Arab woman who was sent to her home country to give birth and subsequently abandoned by her Bahraini husband. According to the court records, the woman married the defendant in 2019 and gave birth to a baby girl in 2020. Fearing repercussions from his first wife, the Bahraini man sent the Arab woman back to her home after convincing her that it would be better to be among her family members to receive full care and support from them. “He told me to stay until I give birth to the child, and then I would return back,” the woman told judges at the High Sharia Court. “However, he stopped answering my calls and responding to my messages.” The woman’s lawyer Mohammed Al Thawadhi argued before the court that the defendant neglected his financial and legal obligations despite repeated attempts to contact him and urge him to facilitate her return, including obtaining a passport for their daughter and a residency permit for herself. “He cited concerns about his first wife as the reason for his inaction,” the lawyer told the court. This left the woman and her sick daughter, who […]
