Global coronavirus cases reach 98.9 million

About 98.9 million (98,938,849) people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and there have been 71,100,956 global recoveries, according to a worldodometer tally.

In the US, the tally showed that the confirmed cases reached 24,627,882 and at least 410,105 deaths. Furthermore, 119,927 people are currently hospitalized, according to COVID Tracking Project. The US remains first globally in the number of highest coronavirus cases and deaths.

India and Brazil have the second and third highest case tallies, recording some 10.6 and 8.7 million cases, respectively.

India, on Saturday reported 14,256 new registered cases of the coronavirus and 152 deaths.

Brazil, on Friday, reported 56,552 new cases. Deaths rose by 1,096 to 215,243. On fatalities, Brazil ranks second behind the US.

In Britain, the death toll has risen by 1,401 to 95,981, the Department of Health and Social Care said on Friday. As many as 40,261 more lab-confirmed cases raised the country’s overall count to 3,583,000, according to the department’s daily update.

Russia on Saturday reported 20,921 new cases and 559 new deaths. The German health authorities reported on Saturday 879 deaths and 16,417 new cases. The French Health Ministry reported on Friday, 23,292 new cases and 429 new deaths.

Belgian health authorities on Saturday reported 2,444 new infections and 55 more deaths raising the total death toll to 20,675.

The Spanish Health Ministry on Friday reported 400 new deaths and 42,885 more infections. The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment Saturday reported 5,487 new coronavirus cases in the Netherlands and 89 more deaths.

Beijing, China reported on Saturday 107 new coronavirus cases, but did no registered virus-related deaths. South Korea, on Friday reported 346 new cases, bringing the total caseload at 74,262, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

Argentina, Colombia and Mexico have also recorded more than one million cases. Peru is also approaching the milestone of one million cases, although daily cases are falling; the country has one of the highest deaths rates in the world.

Africa has recorded more than three million cases, but the true extent of the pandemic there is not known as testing rates are low.

South Africa, with more than 1.2 million cases and more than 30,000 deaths, is the worst affected country on the continent. Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Nigeria are the other African countries to officially record more than 100,000 cases. Kenya is the only other country with close to 100,000 cases.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population reported on Friday, 748 new cases and 52 deaths. Tunisia’s Ministry of Health on Friday reported 103 new deaths and 2,389 new infections. Mauritania reported 56 new cases and 3 deaths.
