What began as a hopeful marriage proposal ended in controversy and a broken engagement after a Jordanian man walked away from a planned union when his future father-in-law asked him to provide a six-month salary statement and a police clearance certificate.
The incident, which took place in the capital Amman, stirred public debate after local media reported the groom-to-be’s frustration over what he described as “unusual and excessive” demands.
Speaking to Saraya News, the man likened the request to a bank loan application, reportedly telling the father, “Am I applying for a loan from a bank?”
The encounter escalated into a verbal altercation, after which the young man withdrew his marriage proposal altogether.
The case has struck a nerve in Jordan, where rising living costs and high youth unemployment have already made marriage increasingly difficult for many.
