Iraq-Saudi Arabia border crossing opens for trade, first time since 1990

Saudi Arabia and Iraq have reopened Wednesday the Arar desert border crossing after a 30-year closure since the Gulf War.

Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Sultan, Governor of the Northern border area, attended an inauguration ceremony along with Iraq’s Minister of Interior Othman Al-Ghanimi.

Arar will be open to both goods and people for the first time since Riyadh cut diplomatic relations with Baghdad in 1990 following Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait.

The crossing includes a number of customs brokers to enhance trade and economic exchange between the two countries.

“The opening of the Jadidat Arar Port holds a historical significance for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Iraq, which will contribute to strengthening the economic and social ties between the two brotherly countries,” said Ahmad al-Hakbani governor of Saudi Customs.
