The Indian government has officially updated its travel documents. All new Indian passports are now e-passports. This change represents a major technological improvement for millions of Indian expats living in the Gulf. The new system makes international travel faster and more secure than ever.
What is the New Indian E-Passport?
An e-passport looks like a traditional paper booklet, but it has a powerful feature. It contains an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and a tiny antenna. You can easily identify the new version by the small, gold-colored chip symbol on the front cover.

The chip stores your personal details. This includes your name, date of birth, and nationality. It also holds your biometric data, such as digital fingerprints and your photograph. This digital layer serves as a second, tamper-proof version of your physical passport.
Why Expats Should Upgrade
For Indian expats in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and across the Gulf, the e-passport is a significant benefit.
- Faster Immigration: Most international airports now use automated e-gates. The chip allows these machines to check your identity in seconds. You do not have to wait in long lines for manual officer checks.
- Improved Security: The chip uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone to forge or tamper with your data. If someone tries to change the physical page, the digital data on the chip will not match, alerting authorities immediately.
- Global Recognition: The new passport meets International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. This gives your document higher credibility at global checkpoints.
How to identify an e-passport
It is easy to tell if you have the latest version. Just look for a small, gold-colored rectangular symbol on the front cover. This indicates the presence of the embedded RFID chip. You may also see a change in the numbering system: e-passports use two letters followed by six digits, while older versions used one letter followed by seven digits.

How to apply for an e-passport in the UAE
Since 28 October 2025, all passport applications are processed as e-passports through the Global Passport Seva Portal 2.0 (GPSP 2.0).
The steps are simple:
- Register on the portal at https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/gpsp
- Log in with your credentials and select your application type (Fresh or Re-issue).
- Upload ICAO-compliant photographs and your supporting documents.
- Schedule an appointment at BLS International centres near you.
- Submit your printed application along with your original documents to the centre.
If you are renewing a passport without changes, the process is incredibly fast. Once you enter your old passport number, the portal fills in your details automatically, allowing you to complete the application in under two minutes. For new passports, such as those for babies born in other countries, you have to fill in all details manually.
If you are not comfortable with digital processes, you can still submit applications through typing centres, community organisations, or your company’s HR department.
Important things to know
What happens to traditional passports?
Your existing passport stays valid until it expires. Switching to an e-passport is optional for now, but it is highly recommended for frequent travellers who want to use automated gates.
Will fees change?
No. Passport fees stay the same. Additionally, minor corrections can now be made at BLS centres at no extra cost.
What is stored inside the chip?
The RFID chip holds digital copies of your personal details and biometric information. This data is protected by Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). It is readable by immigration authorities worldwide but safe from hackers.
How are biometrics collected?
Currently, UAE missions do not collect separate biometrics at the centre. Instead, the necessary data is captured from the ICAO-compliant photographs you submit with your application.
Travel with Confidence
The move to chip-enabled passports marks a new era for the Indian diaspora. It simplifies the lives of frequent travellers and enhances the strength of the Indian passport worldwide. Whether you are flying home for a holiday or travelling for business, your new e-passport guarantees a smooth journey.
